With the title track and this song it was plainly clear, just two tracks in, that Surfin' USA was already a big improvement over The Beach Boys' debut. 'Farmer's Daughter' is just beautiful. The vocals are, as would become normal with this band, pure ear candy. Solid tune all around. 4.

Although Dick Dale's version will always be my favourite, Carl and co make a more than decent job of it.
Most folks seem to object to the "sea of instrumentals" on SUSA, but I can't get enough of 'em!

5. "Misirlou" is impressive done by school kids. It's got new popularity in "Pulp Fiction", Tarantino said in some interview being Dale fan.

Was going to give it a solid 4 but decided to give it a 5 instead, for the above reason. Carl had just turned 16 and David was 14. Rock on!

Sorry, I've just unlocked the poll. Thanks for letting me know. Then, vote!!! As for 'Misirlou, it's a bit lifeless, but the best instrumental they've done at this point. I'd give it a high 3

Inferior to the original but still good. Better than the surf instrumentals on the first album. 3.

They still have one foot in the pop traditions of the early '60s and that's fine with me. Keep them instrumentals coming! 5.

The power of the instrumentals really comes out in the mono mix!

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

My favorite surf instrumental on the album along with 'Let's Go Trippin''. Pretty good. 4.

'The Lonely Sea' is *g o d d a m n* majestic. Months before 'In My Room', Brian was already exploring inner feelings instead of surfing and racing and miscellaneous juvenile pursuits. I love the fun in the sun stuff more than some people do, but I still appreciate Brian branching out this early in other thematic territory, the kind of stuff that'd lead to Today, Summer Days and Pet Sounds. And I really like the spoken part. Great all around.

Great chord sequence in the chorus, most original in its day. That bass line is unusual too, with its flattened second.
Perhaps Mike's sax solo belongs in the "understated instrumental breaks" topic (well, perhaps not). Still, it's very effective in its simplicity.
