JK I think thatís the first time Iíve seen you not give a song 5 stars Shocked

3/5 for me. Itís nothing special, but itís also not dreadful either. I gotta admit, the production on this song (and the rest of the album) is crystal clear, even with that distorted sounding synth and guitar. Itís a wobbly start to a pretty great album.

Sometimes I wonder if this was Brian Wilson showing his sense of humor by producing a version of Rock and Roll Music that doesn't rock.

Great song, poor version.   I'll even take the Yahoo Serious version over this one.

1. Mike’s vocals are really awful and nasally. Why was this song ever a hit?

The combination of Chuck Berry's songwriting and the Beach Boys "oohs' and "ahhs". It's the Surfin' USA effect. That's what people wanted to hear!

And I disagree with KDS, it rocks. Mike's nasal vocal is the only drawback for me, but it works just well enough. I love the "rock, roll, rockin' and roll" bit.

Yeah, it seems extra harsh coming from JK  LOL

I must say, BE, your definition of "rocks" must be a little different than mine.

If we were discussing the mix that appeared on MiC, or a live version....maybe.

I've been giving this album a bit of a re-evaluation lately, and it's much better than I initially thought. However, this is still a clunker. 2/5

Normally I award 4 stars to stuff I'm not overly fond of. But this one really grates on me.

On reflection, maybe I should have made that a 3! Grin

About the song being a "hit." Outside of the states it sunk like a stone. I feel like the fact it didn't do well in the UK says a lot.

Iíll give this song a high 4. Love everything about it except for Mikeís singing, which reduces the score.

Mike's vocal makes my heart soar. Especially when he sings "you're not alone ya know I'm just a dial away"

5, beautiful song

Agreed. Each aspect of this song (vocally, instrumentally, lyrically) has a really quirky happiness to it.

A 5 from me too. It's in my opinion the best original song on the whole album.

Just barely a 2, because Everyone's In Love With You is a 1 and this is at least twice as good as that.

3/5

The best part about this song is that Brian sounds like heís having fun with it. Outside of that, there is nothing beautiful or endearing about it, it sounds like a really simple cover of the song.
