Run For Your Life

At least John later said that he regretted writing this song.

Run For Your Life is a great song, but I think it's the weakest of the ones left.

It's an amazing song but

I like the song.  Don't take the lyrics so seriously.  You think John was out looking for her with a real gun?  I never took it that way.  More like, you'll be dead to me "emotionally" - unless you decide to love me (unlikely by that point).  Looking back, it could have been about his crumbling marriage.  He had a tough time staying true, which is front and center in the lyrics of "Norwegian Wood" and "Girl".  I think it was another case of you're gonna lose that girl, help, nowhere man... most of Lennon's lyrics after the boy/girl period were the same - nobody loves me or so what if they do.  I believe he had a hard time living in a spotlight.  John's life was a whirl of feelings by 1965.  Wealth, women, and liquor (and other substances) did him in for the rest of his life.  There was another side of John, 'tho - love, real love.  Which is what he is promoting in "The Word" - he was always a dreamer, never really sure if he should be "Out" or "In", forgotten ("It's Only Love") or remembered ("In My Life").  In the end what we all want is love, the promise of love.  He expressed that very well from "If I fell" to "Grow Old With Me"-

My vote goes to:  "Michelle" - I'll start early to off it.  In the singles only plan, it will probably win.

Re: Run For Your Life, it's also important to note that he lifted that line from an Elvis song called "Baby Let's Play House".

I agree with all that 100% and always have but I never said that I took the lyrics seriously. I just needed a picture to post for that song and that's the one I found.

Okay, okay, I wasn't singling you or anybody else out.  Don't internalize every thing I write.  We're here to have fun.

I forgot to note it did make Song of the Month!  Somebody liked it back then.  Great picture of John promoting a band he liked.  Most people had a hard time understanding that in the 60's.  The Beatles and the Stones were friends, not enemies.  Had a deal where one would not release singles to compete with each other.  Except for the Christmas market, then all bets were off - everybody wanted a Christmas #1.

I also always thought Run for Your Life sounded like a Monkees song.

Or, I suppose, the Monkees often sounded like Run for Your Life.

The preceding albums were the countdown. Now we are BLASTING OFF!!!

Quote
Rubber Soul is an album by the Beatles, their sixth UK album, and the tenth released in America. Released on 3 December 1965, it met with a highly favourable critical response and topped record charts in the United Kingdom for several weeks, as well as in the United States, where it was issued with a different selection of tracks.

Produced by George Martin, Rubber Soul incorporates a mix of 1960s pop, soul, and folk music styles. The album's name comes from the term plastic soul, which popular African American soul musicians coined to describe Mick Jagger, a white musician singing soul music. It was the second Beatles album – after the British version of A Hard Day's Night – to contain only original material, and was recorded in just over four weeks to make the Christmas market. Unlike the five albums that preceded it, Rubber Soul was recorded during a continuous period, whereas the group had previously made their albums during breaks between tour dates and other commitments. The project marked the first time that the Beatles focused on creating an album as an artistic work, an approach that they then developed with Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).

The album has been included in numerous "best of" album lists compiled by various publications, and is regarded by musicologists as a major artistic achievement that continued the group's artistic maturation while attaining widespread critical and commercial success. In 2012, Rubber Soul was ranked number five on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2013, after the British Phonographic Industry changed their sales award rules, the album was declared as having gone platinum.

"Drive My Car" is somehow worse than "The Word"? Really? Ditto "You Won't See Me". 2 of the best tracks of RS. Dear dear Deirdre holy cow.
"The Word".

Yep not sure I get it either. Isn't the point of these threads to explain the choice? To discuss? I'd sure like to hear why "Drive My Car".
