Curious if anyone has any other examples to add to this list.

I just started digging into Prince’s catalog (which just finally hit Spotify), and noticed an identical-sounding flanging/phasing instrument on his 1978 song “So Blue” at 3:15 (no Youtube link available for this, but it’s on Spotify), which sounds just like the flanging/phasing instrument on The BBs’ “It’s Over Now” at 2:24.

Both songs were done roughly within a year of each other (although The BBs’ song was unreleased, so it wasn’t a matter of these artists influencing each other); does anyone have any idea of what this instrument is? I’m thinking a guitar with a particular pedal, probably the exact same pedal on both songs.

--------

Another example is one that I noticed awhile back and mentioned in a previous thread (that didn’t get any real responses), which I’ll share again:

Give a listen to The Church’s famous 1988 song, “Under the Milky Way”:

Between 1:33 to 1:53, there’s a repeating “twinkling” type keyboard part that is heard during pauses between the lines of lyrics.  Then give a listen to The BB’s 1989 song, “Somewhere Near Japan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAdeXsyIvE4

Repeatedly throughout the song, at 3:01, 3:18, 3:37, 3:55, 4:12, 4:31, a very, very similar-sounding keyboard part is heard. Is this the exact same type of keyboard and patch/setting? And does anyone think this is a complete coincidence, or did Terry Melcher, when producing SNJ, perhaps intentionally ape of the sound from “Under the Milky Way”?

Lately I've been kind of obsessed with the song "You Know It" by Colony House.  Parts of it sound a lot like "I Get Around," particularly in the chorus and the musical bridge during the first verse.

I listened to the whole album, Only The Lonely, and noticed quite a few Beach Boys moments.  On top of that the font of the words on the album cover is the same as Pet Sounds, so I'm convinced they were listening to The Beach Boys when making it.

I was thinking about starting a similar thread last night as I dusted off an old favourite from back in the day... the Jayhawks Smile album from 2000. It's funny, that album is one of my all time faves, but back when it came out I wasn't into the Beach Boys and didn't even know about their ill-fated Smile project.

So when I put the Jayhawks' Smile on last night, all of a sudden it occurred to me that the album may in fact have some very direct Beach Boys influences and references in it.

From being named Smile (sacrilege!) to the repetition of the words "cool, cool water" in the chorus of "A Break in the Clouds", to one of the tracks even being named Mr. Wilson... and then some of the instrumentation, arrangements, and the melodies and harmonies themselves obviously being influenced in some way by the Beach Boys... it was pretty neat to listen to it in a new light Smiley

Still a wonderful album, I'd say it's stood the test of time, at least thus far. Highly recommend. Unfortunately I've been unable to find a link to the full album on youtube, but here's the title track:

And wouldn't you know it, in my search for a link to "Mr. Wilson", someone has actually uploaded a video for the song with photos of Brian - guess I'm not the only one who made the connection Smiley
