Feb 19, 20 1962-The BBs performed at the Academy of Fine Arts Theatre in San Diego, CA. Bruce Brown’s “Surf Crazy” film was also shown each night.  Al apparently played these two shows though he’d quit or was about to quit the band at this point (take a look at the 1989 Endless Summer TV Show “Campfire” segment and you’ll catch a scene of Al recalling how they crashed a party following one of these shows and performed an impromptu “Surfer Girl”, “which we hadn’t even recorded yet.”  The crowd apparently laughed, angering the guys.)

Feb 19 1964-The BBs were at Western to record “Keep An Eye On Summer” and “Pom, Pom Play Girl.” The following day they recorded the album “filler”-Cassius Love Vs. Sonny Wilson, Louie Louie and Shut Down Volume 2. Feb 21, 1964 the BBs appeared in Hoquiam, WA with The Beachcombers, The Capris, Gail Harris and the Chandells.  The next night they played the Seattle Opera House with Bobby Vinton, Trini Lopez, The Cascades, Mel Carter, Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs. On Feb 23 1964 they were at the Spokane Coliseum with Jimmy Gilmer and the Cascades.  On Feb 28 1964 the BBs played an afternoon show at Cupertino High School.  Brian skipped the show but was with them that night at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose

Feb 18 1965 the BBs played at the Memorial Auditorium in Worcester, MA with Brian.  This was a makeup show for the October 1964 concert that been halted due to rioting. However by the time the BBs played in Montreal on Feb 19 1965 Glen Campbell was back to replace Brian. Glen played with them on Feb 20 at the YM/YWCA Auditorium in Ottawa-with The Girl Friends, The Big Town Boys and The Staccatos- and at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on Feb 21. The tour ended with a show at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo on Feb 22. Feb 24 1965- the BBs were at Western to work on the track for the single remake of Help Me Rhonda.  Feb 26 1965 the BBs played the San Jose Civic Auditorium with the Beau Brummels, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Tikis and the Preps.  The next day they appeared at the Civic Auditorium in Sacramento with the Marauders and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Feb 18 1966 the BBs played at the KRNT Theater in Des Moines with the T-Bones and the Sheep, and on February 20 they appeared at the Assembly Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma with the same bill.  According to Keith Badman’s book, Top of the Pops filmed the group for promo to be aired with Barbara Ann at Brian’s house on February 22 1966. I can neither confirm nor deny.

Feb 1967-The BBs were on tour with Keith, The Left Bank and The Electric Prunes. On Feb 18 they decided to do something ridiculous. They played Memorial Hall in Dayton at 3 PM, and then headed to Memorial Auditorium, in Columbus for a show at 6 PM.  Then they headed back to Dayton for a 7 PM show and back to Columbus for an 845 PM show.  So each band left as soon as their set was over. Feb 19 1967 the tour ended with a gig at the Masonic Temple in Detroit.  Lorraine Alterman of The Detroit Free Press commented, “The Beach Boys breezed through a collection of their hits like ‘Surfer Girl,’ ‘Sloop John B’ and ‘Good Vibrations.’…The bearded Mike Love, wearing a white fur cap a la Dr. Zhivago, joked around with the audience between numbers in a casual way that made the crowd feel they were at a friendly get together not a concert. Unfortunately, the Beach Boys gave the impression on their songs that this was just another job to them.  It was, but you still would like to think they were singing and playing their hearts out for you. They didn’t project that added zing of excitement which distinguishes a great performance from a good one.”

Feb 20 and 21 1967-the BBs (or at least Brian) were at Columbia to work on Heroes and Villains.  Feb 24 and 26 vocals were recorded at Columbia-though according to C-Man tapes of these two sessions are lost.  On the night of Feb 26 1967 some of the BBs attended the Teen Screen Magazine Awards at the Hollywood Palladium.  The BBs received the award for Record of the Year-“Good Vibrations” from Billy Hinsche. Carl and Bruce are in the photos I have- receiving the award in person. Feb 27 and 28 1967 the BBs worked on Heroes and Villains at Western

Feb 24 1968 the Friends sessions started around this time but the BBs apparently worked on the Sunflower song “All I Wanna Do” at this session.  Feb 19, 1969-the BBs appeared on the Kraft Music Hall TV Show in Burbank-miming I Can Hear Music and California Girls-this color clip can be seen in Endless Harmony-the BBs looking a bit square surrounded by many girls. The show was taped before Feb 7 since Carl mentioned the recent TV taping while on tour in Texas. Feb 21 1969 a session was held for Deirdre. Feb 24, 1969 the BBs were at Sunset Studios to work on the B-side Celebrate the News and the unreleased What Can the Matter Be.  The next day they held another session for Celebrate the News.  On Feb 28 1969 they made their second appearance on the Joey Bishop Show.  They played I Can Hear Music.  I believe this footage is lost-certainly it has never turned up on YouTube.

Feb 18, 1970 the Add Some Music album was mastered-this was the first version of the Sunflower album given to Warner Reprise. The label was unsure about the quality and commercial potential of the LP and decided to float a trial single of “Add Some Music” on Feb 23. The single sank like a stone and the BBs were soon informed that the LP was unacceptable and needed more work.  Feb 20, 1970-Mike was arrested in Hollywood after being chased by cops for violating the right of way with his Rolls Royce and not stopping when flagged by police.  It made all the newspapers. As he discussed in his own book he was having problems that month due to over fasting and soon ended up in a hospital.  As a result, Brian joined them for shows at Gonzaga University in Spokane on Feb 26, the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver on Feb 27 and the Opera House in Seattle on Feb 28. One of those shows was taped and has made the rounds for years.  It happens to be a favorite of mine-though it was poorly recorded.

Feb 20 1971-the BBs played the first show of their Jack Rieley engineered “comeback” at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica with The Flame and Flash Cadillac.  This was the first show where they played a much longer set.  Brian was present but didn’t get onstage. John Ingham of Creem enjoyed the show but took the BBs to task for being “lazy and complacent.”  He noted they played nothing they’d been working on since Sunflower and that their arrangements stuck closely to the old recordings, “never bothering to explore the harmonic possibilities or use the instrumental complexities or subtleties.  Instead the horn section creates volume without texture, within which the band works as a rhythm unit.  Through all this only Daryl Dragon’s piano work provides any musically excellent quality.”

Feb 23 1971-the BBs headed to New York and appeared on WPLJ Radio to promote their legendary appearance the next night at Carnegie Hall, which Jon and I discuss at length in our book. After the show the group was interviewed for Crawdaddy Magazine. It’s possible that on this night or else on Mar 1 the Beach Boys were filmed being interviewed by singer David Goldberg in their Chelsea Hotel room.  They also sang while sitting in a bathtub and this recently obtained B&W footage was seen at the end of the 2012 Beach Boys Do It Again home video.  The BBs headed to Ohio to play in Columbus on Feb 25 and then to Boston for a show with Seals and Croft on Feb 28.  Dave Marks was going to school there at the time and joined them onstage.  I discussed this whole period in quite a bit of detail in my book with Jon.

Feb 20 1972 strings were added to the ultimately unreleased track “Out in the Country”.  By Feb 24, 1972 the BBs were in the Netherlands to appear on the Top Pop TV Show in Amsterdam. I believe Keith Badman’s book stated that they played Marcella but they probably actually performed the single You Need A Mess of Help.  On Feb 25 they performed at the Grand Gala du Disque with an all-star cast, including Johnny Cash. This was televised in the Netherlands. The BBs performed “Heroes and Villains”, “Sloop John B”, “Surf’s Up,” and “Student Demonstration Time.”  Before heading back to the States, the BBs held a big press conference in London to drum up publicity.  They made news by announcing that they were adding Blondie and Ricky to the mix.  This was big news at a time when it was pretty rare to have a multi-racial rock group.

Feb 1974 the BBs were on tour with Jim Stafford and appeared at the City Auditorium in Colorado Springs on Feb 18. On Feb 19 they appeared at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.  On Feb 22 Dennis held a recording session to tape an early version of Friday Night.

Feb 19 1977- Brian, Carl, and Dennis presented an award on the CBS TV Grammy Awards in LA. A brief clip of this can be spotted in the American Band Documentary-during the Dennis tribute. Carl was briefly sans beard for the only time I can recall post 1970.  Feb 25 1977 Brian held a session for “Deep Purple” and “It’s Over Now”

Feb 18 1978 the BBs played the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City.  Brian skipped that show. Feb 22 1978 a session was held at Wally Heider Studios to add strings to Belles of Paris and My Dianne.
Feb 26 1978 the BBs had flown to New Zealand and appeared at the Western Springs Stadium in Auckland.  All eyes were on Brian, who’d last appeared there in 1964. Phil Gifford of The Auckland Star noted that “Wilson sat at a white grand piano gnawing the fingernails on his left hand while he absently picked at the keyboard with his right…No matter how the others tried to encourage Brian to react (Love introduced him as ‘The Big B’ before a sad attempt by Brian-whose voice seems completely shot-to take a lead vocal) he sat stolidly at the piano, a stranger to his own music…Some must have wondered as I did, whether it’s fair to a man or his audience to use a massive outdoor concert as some form of therapy.”  The BBs played the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Christchurch on Feb 28 1978.  New Zealand TV filmed this but is just gathering dust in a vault-it’s never been on You-Tube.  The group had held a press conference that morning.  Asked how they felt about having Brian on the road, they replied, “We did not know how much we missed him until he came back on stage.”  Asked what their favorite Beach Boys LP was, Dennis replied “Pacific Ocean Blue!”  Other members said, “The new one coming out.”  Brian volunteered that Smiley Smile was his favorite, which prompted a surprised Carl to laugh and say, “I thought it was Friends.” Brian then agreed.

Feb 21, 1979 Brian held a session at Murph’s Place for “Romeo and Juliet”-a track for American Spring.   The BBs played the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Feb 22, 1980, followed by shows at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Feb 23 and at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo on Feb 24 1980. They then started a residency at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland on Feb 26. Dennis was persona non grata at this time, so wasn’t there but Brian was present.  Bruno Bornino of the Cleveland Press was enthusiastic about this residency.  He gushed that, "The Beach Boys not only delivered, but got stronger with each song.  By the time the band completed the last song-'Fun, Fun, Fun'-the fans were standing on chairs, climbing on stage and getting crazy...And the Beach Boys do nothing but hits.  They don't miss too many either...All in all it was a great night and shouldn't be missed."

Dennis was back in the lineup in Feb 1981 for shows at the University of Iowa on Feb 18, Kemper Arena in Kansas City on Feb 19, Barton Coliseum in Little Rock on Feb 20, the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS on Feb 21, the Mabee Center in Tulsa on Feb 22, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales on Feb 23 and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM on Feb 24.
As an example of this period and how it was reviewed: Leland Rucker of the Kansas City Star reported that Al commented, “We’ll play all the old stuff.  That’s what we’re all here for anyway.” Rucker commented “The group has given up trying to do anything else, of course. Nobody listened when the Beach Boys tried to say something besides ‘Fun, Fun, Fun.’  Except for ‘Lady Lynda’ from the LA Light album, all the material was pre-1966. The highlight, of course, was the appearance of head Beach Boy Brian Wilson on grand piano.  Although he wrote every Beach Boys classic, he managed only a squeaky ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ during the show. Still it was his forceful piano work that held the rest of it together.”  It’s interesting that the reviewer thought Brian’s piano held it all together, since musicians I’ve talked to say that during this period his piano was often turned way down in the mix because he was so spaced or bored that he often played a different tune or in a different key (often the original one from the recording!) Carl wasn’t too thrilled with the state of the band at this time and soon departed for his short solo career.  He didn’t play another show with them till April 1982.

Feb 19, 1982 Carl was at Cherokee Studios working on She’s Mine and Young Blood for his second LP.  Around this time Mike appeared on Solid Gold to sing “Looking Back With Love,” though this may have been taped months earlier.  It must have been taped before Feb 19 as the BBs were in Idaho to play at Rick’s College.  On Feb 20 1982 they were at Brigham Young University in Provo-where Brian got into some trouble for chain-smoking cigarettes at the Mormon institution. The BBs played the Selland Arena in Fresno on Feb 21 and then began a four-day stay at Harrah’s in Tahoe on Feb 23 1982.

Feb 17 1983 the BBs played the Stampede Corral in Calgary. They then appeared at the Memorial Arena in Victoria, BC on Feb 18. On Feb 19 they played the Paramount Theater in Portland, OR and flew up to Alaska to appear in Anchorage on Feb 22.  Brian wasn’t on the tour-as he was holed up with Landy in Hawaii-losing a ton of weight.  Feb 15 to 20 1984-The BBs were at Harrah’s in Tahoe, playing the first shows after Dennis’s death.  There were tentative plans for a BBs tour of Australia in Feb 1986 including a Feb 21 appearance at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne but it didn’t happen.  Feb 24 1986-Brian made a rare solo app at the Forum in Los Angeles as part of Vietnam Veterans benefit.  Tapes of this make the rounds. Feb 18-23 1987-The BBs were at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and Brian played some of these shows with them.

Wow this post is long! Let’s stop here.
