Most Satisfying Pairing of Tracks on an Album
«
on:

I am very fond of Time To Get Alone being followed by Never Learn Not To Love and the trio of All I Wanna Do-Forever-My Sweet Love
But I think the greatest pairing of songs on any album ever made is Kiss Me, Baby being followed by She Knows Me Too Well. I would also say that the whole of Side 2 of Today (minus Bull Session) is my favourite sequence of music anywhere.

I'd have a really hard time voting against "Our Prayer" into "Heroes and Villains."
However, I'd also have a really hard time voting against "Fun Fun Fun" into "Don't Worry Baby."
However, I'd also have a really hard time voting against the closing triumvirate on
Surf's Up
.
However, I'd also have a really hard time voting against the entire tracklist of
Pet Sounds
.

Sail Plane Song followed by Loop De Loop on the Endless Harmony soundtrack is immensely satisfying.

For now, it's a 2fer pairing (although it probably doesn't count):
"Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring" followed by "Can't Wait Too Long" on the
SS/WH
2fer. What a transition!

I've always loved Let's Go Away for Awhile into Sloop John B on Pet Sounds. My argument against those who say Sloop doesn't belong on the album.

"Wild Honey" into "Aren't You Glad" is a good one.
But of course who could ever forget the legendary "original" sequencing of "Summer of Love", "Kokomo", "Surf's Up", and "Wipe Out" on the PBS CD?

Interesting that you make use of a "talk track". My choice (on reflection) would be "Our Favorite Recording Sessions" followed by "Don't Back Down". The note Brian forgets in "Sessions" is the first pitched note you hear in "DBD"...

That sequence is so inappropriate, you almost have to try to do it that badly.

I'm quite fine with:
I WANNA PICK YOU UP and then hearing AIRPLANE (from BB Love You)
AT MY WINDOW and then COOL COOL WATER (from Sunflower)
100% in agreement with the already mentioned WALK ON BY and then OL' MAN RIVER

What came to mind was the second side of
Sunflower
from 'All I Wanna Do' to 'Cool, Cool Water'. That whole sequence of songs is really, really beautiful.
Also 'The Night Was So Young' into 'I'll Bet He's Nice' on
Love You
.
And the last three on
Surf's Up
.
And, as the captain said, all of
Pet Sounds
.

I think the greatest "1-2 punch" would have to be "California Girls"/"Let Him Run Wild" ... that said, the entirety of Side One of
Summer Days
to me is the best succession of tracks on any BB record. Along with
Today
, Side One just sounds
exciting
. The only thing that lets down
Summer Days
as a whole is the record starts to drag starting with "You're So Good To Me" (I like the song ... just a weird momentum) to the end of the record.
My second favorite string is "I Know There's An Answer"/"Here Today"/"I Just Wasn't Made for These Times"/"Pet Sounds" ... it's just an unusual trajectory of sound and kind of an eerie buildup ... Carl Wilson called
Pet Sounds
"a new place", and I think that string of tracks is the best example.
Other fav raves include "Day in the Life of a Tree"/"'Til I Die"/"Surf's Up", "Rock & Roll Music"/"It's OK"/"Had to Phone Ya", and "Let Us Go On This Way"/"Roller Skating Child"/"Mona".

Believe it or not I actually think it works very well (that is, the first two of those three). You have this really goofy speaking track followed by a absolute masterpiece. The contrast between the two is why it works: One minute you're listening to some guys goofing around, and then next thing you know - BLAM! - you're blown away with the musical equivalent of a Renoir. It's almost a shock value thing. If they had put another masterpiece song before it, I don't think the impact of WOTS would be nearly as much in the record-listening experience.

Couple of great pairings came to mind while listening to the
GV
box set (prompted by the other topic). Both are from
Pet Sounds
. One pairing is not in that compilation ("Don't Talk"/"Waiting For The Day"), the other is ("I Just Wasn't..."/"Pet Sounds").
I'd forgotten that the magnificent title track was on there----well done, compilers. :=)
