Sorry this is happening so soon in the year, but I'm going to be away from a computer indefinitely for family reasons, so if anybody feels like keeping this up go ahead. Love and Mercy til next time.

Sorry to hear that, AC. I really hope everything turns out well, whatever you're going through.

On days that I can and have access to my Beach Boys book I'll try to keep this thread going. I, and I'm sure many others here, hope you'll be back soon. Love and Mercy, indeed.

According to my Beach Boys Diary, which despite its one-entry-a-day format got a thorough going-over from both AGD and Ian Rusten (many thanks, gentlemen) at the now-defunct Capitol Board, "Brian arrives by plane in Hawaii this day in 1983 for round-the-clock treatment by Eugene Landy and his team". So there you go.

I find the early '80s really interesting (and tragic). In January of '81 Brian, Dennis, and Carl are all performing with the band. On top of that, they are performing with American Spring Huh, Brian and Dennis are collaborating ('Stevie' recording session), and they're celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band. Considering Brian and Marilyn had recently divorced, Dennis was about to get beat up on Super Bowl Sunday, and Carl was about to leave the band...well...strange days indeed.

I have had time to do this in a long time but I'll step in for a sec to keep it going.  But mine will be for the week January 23 to 30.

Jan 25 1962- The BBs played one of their earliest shows at the Presbyterian Church in Hawthorne.  The next day they played the Wilson’s High School Senior Breakfast-with Chris Montez and the Mellow Teens.  This show wasn’t in my book as Jim Murphy uncovered it.  Circa January 29 1963-The BBs played their first show outside California at a ZBT Frat Party in Tucson, AZ.  The exact date of this show isn’t known but it was in late January.  Jan 30, 1963 the BBs also played the Navajo Nation Fairgrounds in Window Rock, AZ.

January 23 1964 the BBs played the Town Hall in Hobart, Tasmania on their first overseas tour with Roy Orbison.  The next day they were back in Sydney to tape The Surf Sound TV Show. The Beach Boys mimed to Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe. They then flew to Wellington, New Zealand and had a meet and greet at the airport at 11:30 AM on Jan 25.  That day they played three shows at the Civic Theatre, Invercargill, NZ.  They then flew to Christchurch, where they spent the 26th. On the 27th and 28th they performed at the Theatre Royal in Christchurch, NZ Town Hall.  On January 29 they were in Wellington and performed at the Founders Hall in Hamilton, New Zealand on January 30.

On January 27 1965 the BBs played the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR.  Glen was unable to play this show and Brian stepped in for the first time since his Houston departure. Glen was back to perform with them at the Exhibition Forum in Vancouver on January 29-the first Canadian concert. On January 30, 1965 they played the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle with Jan and Dean, The Viceroys, the Sonics, The Astronauts, Sir Raleigh and the Coupons, Jimmy Hannah, Terry Black and the Dynamics.  You got your moneys worth in those days-though the sound system was usually poor and the BBs played forty minutes at most.

Jan 24 1966 Brian worked on the track intro for You Still Believe In Me.  The BBs had just completed their Japanese tour and most of them flew to Hawaii to relax. Mike Love, Dick Duryea and Bruce Johnston on the other hand decided to visit Hong Kong, where they held a press conference at the Mandarin Hotel on Jan 25 1966 (the conference was to clear up why they were there for the curious media).  The BBs didn’t actually get around to playing there for many years.  Bruce and Mike joined the others in Hawaii in time to perform at HIC Arena on Jan 29 1966 with Jackie Lee, Lou Christie, The Mop Tops, The Undertakers, Frankie Samuels and the Kinfolk.  Jan 23 1967 Brian worked on Surfs Up, apparently on String and Horn Overdubs. The tape of this session is apparently lost.  Jan 25 1967-Brian produced Jasper Daily singing “Teeter Totter Love”-officially released on the 2011 box set. Jan 27 1967 at Columbia the BBs worked on Heroes and Villains (the In the Cantina section and the Children Were Raised section) as well as Whistle In.

Around this time Brian met Maharishi with the BBs in New York. Paul’s future wife Linda was there to photograph the occasion. Not sure exact date of the photo but Maharishi was in the states from Jan 19 to Jan 23 when he left for India. He visited the UN on Jan 20 and gave a TM lecture in Madison Square Garden on Jan 21-so those are the likely days).  He visited Boston on Jan 22 and I am certain Mike saw this lecture as well, as TM already obsessed him. Jan 24-29 1969 three sessions were held during this week for “San Miguel.”

Jan 26 1970-the BBs were hard at work on Sunflower and did overdubs on Tears In the Morning, Our Sweet Love, Lady and Take a load off Your Feet.  The following two days were spent mixing the Live in London tapes at Capitol (though I am not sure how involved the BBs were in that.  Desper told me that he had nothing to do with it and that he wasn’t even aware that EMI was making an album of that tour) On Jan 28 Bruce overdubbed some piano on Tears in the Morning.  Carl was pretty preoccupied at that time with his legal problems.  On Jan 29 1970 he given 3 years probation and fined 4,000 dollars, plus ordered to work two years as institutional helper for the county department of hospitals.  But this wasn’t the end of the story-he felt that he could do more by doing concerts and appealed the sentence. Case dragged on till Sept 1971.

January 1972-Al and Mike were in Majorca, Spain studying TM.  As we all know by the late 1980s there relationship had soured but they were pretty close in the early 1970s due to their common interest in TM.  January 1973-Brian was in Fort Dodge, Iowa with David Sandler to work on the Spring LP.  At some point in January 1974, some of the BBs were at Caribou Ranch to back Elton John Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Mike was attending a five-week TM course in Belgium.  Jan 30, 1976- the sessions for 15 Big Ones began with Brian producing Palisades Park.  January 1977 Mike began a 6-month TM course in Switzerland

January 30 1978 a session was held for Dennis’s great “Baby Blue” Jan 23 and 24 1979 overdubs were done for his song “Love Surrounds Me.”  Jan 26 1980 the song “Sunshine” received overdubs. Jan 28 1980-the song “Keepin’ the Summer Alive” received overdubs. Jan 29 1980-Dennis and Christine McVie were scheduled to appear at an event at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion-but they probably didn’t or at least there is no evidence that they did. January 30, 1980-The BBs, without Dennis, filmed the mini-Concert for the Going Platinum TV documentary at KTTV in Hollywood.

Jan 27 1982-Carl worked on his second album Youngblood. He recorded “Time”. The next day he recorded Opus II and on Jan 29 1982 he worked on She’s Mine and Goin’ Down.  On Jan 28 1982-Mike spoke at UCLA’s Grand Ballroom about TM.  January 1984 the BBs had a tour planned but all the dates were canceled or postponed due to Dennis’s tragic death.  Jan 27-29 1986 the BBs were at Harrah’s Tahoe.
Jan 23 1987 the BBs played at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ.  Jan 24 1987-the BBs appeared on the “Super Night at the Super Bowl” CBS TV-hosted by Patrick Duffy- they sang “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” with Brian. The next day they played live at the pre-super Bowl show in Pasadena. On Jan 26 1987 they played a private show for the Ford motor Company at the Universal-Sheraton-with Brian apparently. On Jan 29 1987 Brian and Gary Usher worked on “All Over Me” and “Magic” The BBs had flown to the Midwest and played the Dane County Coliseum in Madison on the 29th and the Masonic Auditorium in Toledo on January 30 1987.

Jan 23 1988-the BBs played at Caesars’ Palace in Atlantic City, NJ.  They were back in LA on Jan 25 1988 to pick up the award of merit at the American Music Awards. Mike was wearing a hard hat in case people attacked him after his Hall of Fame speech the previous week.  Brian was also there but completely estranged from the group-he sat in a different section of the auditorium.  Jan 24 1989 the BBs played at the Spectrum in Philadelphia with Chicago.  These shows were being filmed for the BBs upcoming Endless Summer TV show and Brian had a solo section of the show where he sang Surfer Girl, Love and Mercy, Melt Away and Walking the Line.  The same thing happened the next night at the Centrum in Worcester, MA and at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on the 27th.

Jan 1990-Brian with Bob Dylan recorded an unreleased version of Spirit of Rock and Roll.  Jan 28 1991-Brian played an 11-song set with Don Was at the China Club in LA.  January 26 1996 the BBs played a private show at the Phoenix Convention Center (it was a pre Super Bowl party). Jan 28 1996-the BBs, with Brian, appeared at Brixton Academy, London to sing “Fun, Fun, Fun” with Status Quo. This was filmed for a video.  The BBs were in England for a week doing promotion for the Quo collaboration. On Jan 29 1996-Brian, while in London, did an interview with Duglas Stewart to be shown at a Tribute show.

Jan 24 1998-the BBs played at the NBC Tent at the Four Seasons Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, CA and Mike Love and California Beach Band played at the Mission Ballroom, Town and Country Hotel in San Diego, CA.  Jan 25 1998- Mike, Bruce, Dave M, Glen Campbell, John Stamos and Dean Torrence played at the Super Bowl Pre-Game Show in San Diego, CA. Al apparently wasn’t told and saw it on TV! Jan 28 1998 Brian recording session at Shrimp Boat Sound in Key West: Vocals for South American-with Jimmy Buffet.  I could go on but I think I’ll stop there…

Regarding the January 1989 BB/Brian shows (the shows with the mini Brian solo sets), do we know for sure that multiple shows were videotaped?

I recall the one live show used for the "Endless Summer" show was a Southern California venue, and it's some sort of outdoor amphitheater, so it's definitely not the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

It would be pretty nice to see multiple live shows from that tour in video. But if those shows were captured, I recall reading that all of the "Endless Summer" show footage was destroyed years ago, perhaps in a fire?

Thanks for keeping it going, Ian. And thanks again for the wonderful book. :=)

Regarding the second BB gig in the list, I read somewhere that Chris Montez and Brian were classmates at Hawthorne (or maybe just schoolmates).

And I managed to weed out from among all the inevitable porn site links that according to old copies of the The Decatur Herald a band called The Mellow-Teens played at least one gig in Decatur, Illinois, in late 1957. (Maybe there's no connection.)

I have to say, those "mini solo set" shows were really bizarre. Brian finally there, but not participating in most of the BB show. Then they do his solo stuff, but with the actual BBs off stage.

He did an early version (different verse melody) of "In My Car" at the Costa Mesa show as shown on the "Endless Summer" show; I wonder if that was the only performance of that one.
