Must've felt so amazing to be working on a second album for Capitol. Momentum building, fandom rising, and the recording of two songs that would clearly be hits.

And two songs that clearly wouldn't be.
No, they were pretty good especially for the early days. Brian's vocal on 'Farmer's Daughter' is heavenly.

Yeah, there seems to be a bit of filler on those albums, but even in the filler there are some pretty great moments.

JANUARY 6th

1964: The Survivors release their Brian Wilson produced/written single ‘Pamela Jean’ and the also Brian Wilson produced/written b-side ‘After The Game’. The Survivors were a one-off group that consisted of Richard Alarian, Bob Norberg, Dave Nowlen, and Brian. This is their only release. [Personal note: The b-side ‘After The Game’ is really beautiful, if you haven’t heard it. If you have, it’s just as beautiful.] Also on this day a recording session for Paul Petersen’s ‘She Rides With Me’ takes place at RCA studios, Los Angeles, California.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Sportatorium in Hollywood, Florida.

1982: The Beach Boys appear on the Merv Griffin Show.

1986: The Beach Boys play a gig at Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah.

2015: The Beach Boys play a gig at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Sarasota, Florida.

Check out the 'Pet Projects' album if you can - the whole thing is full of songs produced by Brian Wilson, including those Survivors' tracks.

It's amazing how much Brian loved producing. There's a generally held belief that he produced songs like this to get better at his own producing for the Beach Boys. But I also think it's likely he was looking for a breakout group that would put him in the same arena as Phil Spector (at least when it came to producing other artists).

Anyone know if Redwood the last band Brian ever tried to produce?

BW's outside productions are great! Such a different sound than the BBs.

Anyone know if Redwood the last band Brian ever tried to produce?

He produced Stephen Kalinich's 1969 album A World of Peace Must Come (that wasn't released until 2008). He also produced the American Spring Spring album.

There should be a list on here of everything he ever touched (musically speaking) if there isn't already.

Doh, I totally forgot about Spring. I was also under the false impression that the Redwood fiasco happened much later than the mid/late 60s.

Apparently he also helped to produce the many moods of his dad, plus the album with the similar name.

JANUARY 7th

1964: Two recording sessions today: one at Western Recorders and the other at Gold Star. At the Western session, ‘In The Parkin’ Lot’, ‘This Car Of Mine’, ‘Denny’s Drums’, and ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ are worked on. ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ is nearly finished (all that’s left are a few overdubs). At Gold Star work is done on ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’.

1965: A recording session for the ‘Please Let Me Wonder’ instrumental at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California. This is Brian’s first recording session since his breakdown December 23rd and it could be symbolically the beginning of (what’s considered by a lot of people) Brian’s musical golden period, which will last a little over two years.

1966: The first gig for The Beach Boys’ first Japanese tour at the Shibuya Koukaido, Tokyo, Japan.

1970: A recording session at Brian’s home studio in Bel Air, California, where they work on ‘Susie Cincinnati’, ‘Good Time’, and a cover of The Beatles’ ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Civic Center, Lakeland, Florida.

1980: A recording session at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California. Vocals for the next album (Keepin’ The Summer Alive) are worked on.

1989: The Beach Boys play a gig after the Hula Bowl at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii.

1999: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford, Connecticut.

2011: A recording session for Brian Wilson’s In the Key of Disney album at Oceanway recording studio, Los Angeles, California.

2015: The Beach Boys play a show at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, Florida.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. The Outlaws are also on the bill.

1979: A recording session for the incredible artistic achievement that is the disco remake of ‘Here Comes The Night’, which takes place at Devonshire Sound studios, North Hollywood, California.

 LOL

1/9 is a fine day in BBs history! A lot of Dennis material and vocals for one of my all-time favorite songs, Please Let Me Wonder. I couldn't help but notice this though...

1978: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California. Dennis works on a song called ‘Baby Blue Eyes’ (soon renamed ‘Baby Blue’) for his upcoming second album, Bambu.

1979: A recording session for ‘Love Surrounds Me’ at Westlake Recording Studios, Santa Monica, California.

What a shame.

JANUARY 10th
1964: A recording session at (probably) Gold Star studio, Los Angeles, California where they work on vocals for ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’ and ‘I Do’ (which won’t be released until the 1990 Surfer Girl/Shut Down Vol. 2 twofer as a bonus track).

1966: The Beach Boys play a gig at Kaikan Hall, Kyoto, Japan.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Von Braun Center, Huntsville, Alabama without Brian.

1980: In a remarkable change of events from the past few days, the Beach Boys work on their vocals for their upcoming Keepin’ The Summer Alive album at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California.

2007: Brian Wilson plays a gig at the Consumer Electronics Show 2007, Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.

2014: The Beach Boys play a show at the Maui Cultural Center, Kahului, Maui, Hawaii.

2015: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, Florida with Uncle Jesse.

JANUARY 11th

1964: A recording session for The Castells’ version of ‘I Do’ at Gold Star studios, Los Angeles, California.

1965: The Beach Boys start and finish their recording of ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ at Gold Star studios, Los Angeles, California.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eczP8C0P5R4

1968: Brian Wilson interviewed at home. This interview would later appear on the Rock and Other Four Letter Words album. I’d really like to hear this interview.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Mid South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee. Brian isn’t there.

1978: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California. They work on one of Brian’s favorite songs, ‘Shortenin Bread’.

1980: After several days of working on their vocals for their upcoming Keepin’ The Summer Alive album at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California, they do it again today.

1991: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Convention Center, San Diego, California at the inaugural of Governor Pete Wilson.

2002: The Beach Boys play a gig at Ben Crenshaw’s house in Austin, Texas. Unless there’s also a place called Ben Crenshaw, and considering they didn’t play inside the body of Ben Crenshaw, I’m figuring it was probably his house.

2008: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Desert Diamond Casino, Sahuarita, Arizona.

2014: The Beach Boys play a gig at the decadent Dairy Queen International Convention, Fort DeRussy Beach Park, Honolulu, Hawaii.

JANUARY 12th

1966: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Kokusai Kaikan Hall, Kobe, Japan.

1967: A recording session for Dennis’s composition ‘I Don’t Know’ at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California. Dennis, Carl, Bruce, and some of the Wrecking Crew are there, but apparently Brian isn’t.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGNQgF4kgeU

1977: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California, for the tag of ‘Airplane’.

1980: A truly historic day, for today is the last day in the seemingly endless saga of them working on vocals for their album Keepin’ The Summer Alive (in reality it was only like 6 days) at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California. In hindsight, none of it would matter anyway, for the album was kinda sh*t.

1987: A session for ‘Spirit of Rock & Roll’ at Evergreen Recording Studios, Burbank, California.

1988: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida.

2014: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii as part of the arena’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Request to Adult Child. My aging eyes can't read light-colored text on dark backgrounds easily, so I use an alternate theme for this site which has black text on a yellowish background.

What that means is that I can't read posts in yellow or pink text, due to a lack of contrast. So if you could avoid using those two colors in your BB history listings, it would be very helpful for those of us who use different themes. Thanks in advance.
