Recently, iv'e been on a big Monkees binge and listened to all albums through Changes (1970). These guys, mostly like The Beach Boys after Smile, had the talents but did not always chose the best songs on their albums. So, from The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees (1968) through Changes (1970), I reconstructed these albums with a few pointers in mind:

1- Michael Nesmith's songs would be a big presence on these albums, like he was on Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd (1967).

2- Peter Tork would stick for one more album (Instant Replay) and Mike Nesmith for Changes (1970).

3- In this alternate discography, the actual "Changes" LP would be released in 1970 as a "Dolenz & Jones" LP during the same year as Nesmith's Magnetic South.

4- I will admit that I am not the biggest Davy Jones fan but he does some good jazzy, Broadway-style tunes or Curt Boettcher-esque ballads (I swear I could hear a Sagittarius version of Time and Time Again!).

All tracks are sourced from the deluxe editions of The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees, Head, Instant Replay, Present, Changes, and all 3 volumes of the unreleased tracks compilation Missing Links.

Enjoy these fanmixes!

Since the 4 Monkees were recording their songs independently of each other at this point, it might be good to try compiling 4 solo albums. The Nesmith disc would be a keeper, and his best stuff was usually not on the albums. The Missing Links series uncovered a lot of Nezgems from the later years - Carlisle Wheeling, Nine Times Blue, St. Matthew,

The Nesmith disc would be a keeper, and his best stuff was usually not on the albums. The Missing Links series uncovered a lot of Nezgems from the later years - Carlisle Wheeling, Nine Times Blue, St. Matthew,

The main goal was to present the later discography as 5 LPs using the best solo tracks, akin to what The Beach Boys were doing around the Sunflower Sessions (and what the original LPs were, in a sense). If you want a neat double LP version of the album Present, check out soniclovenoize's version on his blog:

Next on the list, after 2 psychedelic LPs from 1968, comes with a kind of mini White Album with the original 4 members:

A7 Don't Wait for Me

B2 Mommy And Daddy
B3 Carlisle Wheeling
B4 Smile
B5 Seeger's Theme/Come On In
B6 A Man Without a Dream
B7 The Crippled Lion
