Surf’s Up. For lots of dedicated Beach Boys fans, the song remains one of their most highly regarded accomplishments. On December 15, 1966, Brian sat down and recorded his piano and vocal demo of Surf’s Up. It was the start of something uniquely beautiful. In commemoration of the date, I hope you’ll enjoy the marvelous words and music of Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks  (and the glorious tones of the Beach Boys) with this affectionate tribute. Happy New Year!

Great video!

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Brian explained the lyrics in a very interpretative style on this occasion IIRC. Jules Siegel documented Brian's take.

Brian's explanation style hints that SMiLE was heavily influenced by Arthur Koestler's book the Act Of Creation.
