Thanks. Hadn't heard the Larry Williams version of Slow Down.

I got interested in Carl Perkins after becoming a fan of Elvis back in the 70s.  Listening to his Sun recordings led me to explore Perkins. I bought a 45 of Matchbox at an old record store. Also a 45 of Blue Suede Shoes b/w Honey Don't. Those are some great records.
just spent an enjoyable time listening to these records along with Elvis' Mystery Train (one of my all time favorites).

Thanks again!  Smiley

You're welcome, E. Carl Perkins has a fantastic catalogue of songs, so many of them regarded as classics and rightly so.

A radio station has temporarily gone to a "Beach Music" format.
I was introduced to Beach Music, also known as Carolina Beach Music, when I lived in North Carolina in the early 1980s. Beach Music is popular primarily in North and South Carolina, and also in the coastal areas of Virginia, Maryland, and perhaps Pennsylvania. Basically, what is known as the US Middle Atlantic States.
Beach Music is r and b that can be adaptable to the dance known as the Shag.
A number of regional groups are known for this type of music, such as The Tams, The Tymes, and The Chairmen of the Board.  Also other groups/singers such as The Drifters, Gene Chandler, have songs that fit the mold.
Wonderful music for a warm summer's night...

One of the most frequently played when I was living there, and one I heard yesterday, is by The Tams - "Be Young, Be Foolish, but Be Happy".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAfaR6IuO-4

Another I heard a lot is by The Tymes - "Ms Grace". Just found out that this was a big hit in the UK in the mid-70s.

This seems as good a place as any to post this. There's plenty of talk about the falsetto prowess of Brian and Frankie V. One name that is invariably left out of the discussion is that of Lou Christie. His "Wild Life's In Season", produced by Jack Nitzsche, is a must-hear (regrettably no longer on YouTube). "Trapeze" is another winner:

WXPN is spinning "Dry Your Eyes" by Brenda and The Tabulations as I write this...one of the great, semi-lost slow jam soul classics of the late 60's that was a favorite of The Real Don Steele, who would spin it on his KHJ show.

A GREAT record from '67, #2 on the R&B charts, #20 on the pop charts.

Man, been a long time since I looked into this thread.
Re: Perkins, his Sun recordings are imo among the best things recorded at the Memphis Recording Service. Charlie Rich's recordings as well (most of them weren't released on Sun but on Phillips International etc.). That's where the real stuff is. Perkins' version of "Only you" kinda summarizes everything Sun Records was and wanted to be: It's not "beautiful", but it's raw and - to quote Sam Phillips - R-E-A-L. The guitar break just kills me everytime I hear it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvP3JS6-Mdk

If I'd have to point to a record that defines music with "soul", this one would be one of them.

Not to forgert that Carl cut a lot of other great records after he left Sun. He was such a great songwriter, guitar player and singer. If there was any kind of justice, he would be one of the biggest names in country music to this day. He was not as versatile as Presley (few people are) but when it comes to country and Rock'n'Roll Carl could give Presley a run for his money.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Great to see this topic back in action.

Roy Harper is best known these days for his guest lead vocal on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar" (1975) but he has had a long and illustrious career of his own.

His album Lifemask was recorded two years earlier. This is the opening track:

Rocker: Thanks for that link to Perkins (Only You).  Made my morning.

JK: Lou C. is never far from my thoughts.  Your youtube link made me think he might have been an important influence for the Bee Gees.

But I love this crazy strange footage of Lou singing (well, not really) poolside with a couple of local dancers in, I think, Florida.  He loved the ladies!
(the little movie starts about 15 seconds in... Ah the Sixties.)

Great footage of Mr Christie there, DC. I may conceivably have seen him performing (or miming) "Lightning Strikes" on TV at the time but I can't recall it.

A fascinating artist who should be better known.

The fantastic "Wild Life's In Season" is thankfully back on YouTube:

This one crept into my brain earlier today. It took me some years to get into Supertramp----I had to dig a little deeper but I got there in the end.

This is much older. When Round Robin's "Kick That Little Foot, Sally Ann" starting getting airplay in 1964, I and probably a whole host of others couldn't make out one key word in the lyrics, the name of the song's all-important dance. Was it the "saucer"? Or even (in retrospect) the "salsa"? Turns out it was the Slauson. This was probably the reason why no lyrics were to be found online for years.

It seems the Grateful Dead were not happy with their debut album but I think it's a great combination of "songs" and more extended tracks (including the magnificent "Viola Lee Blues"). This is "Sitting On Top Of The World":

I'd like to dedicate this 1967 US #1 by Jefferson Airplane to someone at PSF. It's been on my mind now for weeks:

It's been a while since I listened to this wonderful Carl Perkins A-side from '71. Written by Carl himself and Bergen White.

Double's "Captain Of Your Heart" helped me through some troubled times in early 2015.

Actually, I was just looking through my diary notes on our group's Sicily itinerary of 2000 and saw I'd noted that a singer/keyboard player had performed it in our hotel lobby.

The Stylistics sang some of the most beautiful soul ballads of all time. My son had this one, "Betcha By Golly Wow", playing on Spotify earlier today:

This is a great favourite of my friend across the road. The version of "This Guy's In Love With You" I remember was by Herb Alpert but Pat Upton nails it vocally. Wow!

Fascinating! That's Carol Bayer Sager, right? Of "You're Moving Out Today" fame...

I see Toni Wine has written a mass of stuff as well and even sang "I'm gonna make your life so sweet" on The Archies' "Sugar Sugar".
