A Merry Christmas to you too, Will. And to you, Elizabeth. And----oh alright!----to everyone else who reads this. King

"Pretty Ballerina" and "A Salty Dog" are two great favourites of mine as well. The Procol Harum song might even qualify as a candidate for the UK equivalent of "Surf's Up"----it's that good. :=)

And may you all have a wonderfully Merry Christmas as well!
 w00t!

With The Association, 2 songs really stand out for me.

One is  "Like Always".  Nice retro feel, amazing harmonies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI2pDpEZCzQ

The other is much more pensive - maybe listen later on, after Christmas.  "Requiem for the Masses." Note - I remember seeing this performance when it first aired on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour way back then:

"No White Flags." - Team Gleason

"(Brian) got into this really touching music with songs like 'In My Room', and 'Good Vibrations' was amazing. The melodies are so beautiful, almost perfect. I began to realize he was one of the most gifted writers of our generation." - Paul Simon

Jolly Christmas to everybody celebrating it. Stuff yourselves up with cool dishes. 3D Within reason. police

john, gotta say I don't like "Along comes Mary", cool "pa-ba-too-paaahh" & some nice arr. choices. They did it best in Monterey festival. Not fan of "Pretty ballerina" either. I do like "Walk away Renee".
Each band is good; to my ears, Left Banke is best example of baroque pop - is it what they dub it? - & it's intricate, to the point that when I listened to "There's gonna be a storm" comp, I couldn't memorize any track! It's the single band which songs I played then forgot what they were like. The many key & chord changes really mess with the brain. But once I figured, me & Left Banke became friends. 3D

Association, "Pandora's golden heebie jeebies": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewiB_Xy5uR4
Left Banke, Bert Sommer lead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3POr9-pGOQ
It isn't in youtube, "Give the man a hand", featuring the best guitar intro. It might as well be their best song.

My second favourite of theirs after "Mary". :=)

Roy Wood was on Jools Holland's end-of-year Hootenanny show, looking and sounding good.

Here's a favourite of mine from The Move, their 1966 debut, "Night Of Fear":

Here's one that I recently discovered. I'm not a fan of Genesis but it turns out they have a pretty good first album from back in the 60s. Here's a great track from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iawItFRdjQM

It is a great track. I like Selling England... and that's enough Genesis for me really. But this is very nice. Thanks, CSM.

Odd how just when you think you're set in your ways at age 30+ a new artist comes along who knocks you sideways. (Learning to love established artists is another matter entirely.)

Holidaying in the UK in the late 1970s I saw on the same TV programme this stunning ballad by Judie Tzuke...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q41KukGopk

...and a song by the UK band Tubeway Army, which sparked off a lifelong love affair with the music of Gary Numan:

Really into soft psychedelia from the 60s at the moment. Here's one that probably many of you know but I just discovered the other night:

This one knocked me out when I heard it at the time (1962) on a French radio station (where else in those days?!). There's an EP out there by The Lafayettes that includes their other classics "Life's So Short" and "Caravan Of Lonely Men". Love the dirty chuckle during the spoken intro of "Nobody But You":

Great R&B song! I first heard it after reading Mark Lewisohn's Beatles book and he mentioned it as a song they played during the Cavern days. You can see it being a track that The Beatles would have loved to play.

As part of my current soft psychedelia obsession, I have this one stuck in my head all day:

The Beatles played it? I can only assume Lennon sang it----it sounds a trifle too debauched for McCartney.  Grin

I remember The Honeybus. Like the oboe on that!

Speaking of your obsession, CSM, I assume you've already delved into stuff by The Move. If not, you may appreciate this:

Ha! Actually, Lewisohn suggests the song was performed by Paul. Here's what he writes in the book (pg. 668):

The Beatles' intense drive to stay one step ahead of every rival (and they were already at least fifty clear) was taken to extremes by Paul in July/August 1962 when sleuthing songs unknown or unconsidered by others. A good find was "Nobody But You," a B-side by a group from Towson, Maryland, called the Lafayettes. Beyond a mawkish introduction, this was a strong call-and-response number in the style of Kansas City.

--

I do love The Move and, yes, I have been especially into them lately. In fact, funny you should send me that song now because over the last few days I have been working on a cover of Walk Upon The Water. Both that song and listening just now to Grass Grow illustrate what a powerhouse their drummer was.

But, yeah, The Move is right in the wheelhouse of the kind of stuff I am into at the moment. Good choice!

Thanks for that information!

Keeping in roughly the same area as The Move, here's a good-timey one (a UK radio hit only) from early 1968 by The Idle Race (w/ Jeff Lynne):

That's cool! The only Idle Race songs I knew were the two on the Nuggets comp. Given the association with Jeff Lynne (and their Kinks-esque sound), I feel like I should have investigated further but never did. But hearing this song makes me want to explore a bit more. Thanks for that!

Joe Meek is a name that looms large in early to mid '60s pop in the UK. A tortured genius, he masterminded a whole host of wonderful sounding 45s, often by artists who by their own admission couldn't sing. This was no impediment to sound wizard Meek----they always ended up sounding like professionals! His backing musicians were another matter----these included many great names of later years.

This is actor John Leyton amidst a typical Meek soundscape on "Wild Wind":

Baby Please Don't Go, by Them with Van Morrison on vocals. Just heard it on the radio, and it's one of those classic records that has as little as one note or one brief musical moment that nails the whole thing. In this case, it's that one "out" flatted 5th guitar note under a menacing bass line that slays me every time. Sounds like something really bad is about to go down in a dark alley somewhere.

Speaking of blues-fueled 60's records with a menacing guitar and bass part..."Shakin All Over". Now the question is which version, the Johnny Kidd and the Pirates cut or the later Guess Who cover...

This was the first record I remember linking at Smiley and I was told it "sucked"----a great start.

I later came to respect the poster in question but it took a while. He left Smiley and has now left PSF... It's a funny old world.

From 1966, this is Lorraine Ellison and one of those records that stops you in your tracks, "Stay With Me":

Two great records I first heard within minutes of each other back in the 1960s:

"Matchbox" (Carl Perkins): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYH_SS_aYtA

"Slow Down" (Larry Williams): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whgvQkmZWc4

Curiously, these later became the two sides of a Beatles 45 that hit big in Canada and the US...
