I used to work on the fringes of the music business in the early '70s and the company I was loosely affiliated with signed String Driven Thing just before I was kicked out. Why "Circus" isn't better known is quite beyond me.

"Four Cornered Room" is a great track, that whole album is great.

Love Neil's early stuff, particularly the double-tracked vocals. His later material is just as good, things like "Laughter In The Rain":

Can't let this fine topic slip from view now can we?

I just love doo wop, particularly the second wave of doo wop in the early sixties, so-called baroque doo wop. Music to melt the heart...

These are The Capris and "There's A Moon Out Tonight":

As penance for forgetting about Fats and Richard as living r'n'r legends from the '50s (shame on me), here are two great favourites of mine:

"Blue Monday": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3e_y9Bc7hs

"Good Golly Miss Molly": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ6akiGRcL8

"Blue Monday" is just one of the best R'n'B records I could think of!

A much more satisfying listen than New Order's song of the same name.

Hey John K,

Great rocker from Sonny there.  Definitely has that classic 'sun' sound.
I love this stuff.
here is a favourite of mine!

Sleepy LaBeef did some great rockabilly covers later on post 'Sun' years.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfTZFV7IbrA
this is a great track found on early Johnny Horton rockabilly sides.
I used to play this song at gigs, it always went down really well!

Thank you, sir. Love the BLR song----those screams during the breaks! The whole "little green men" genre of those years is fascinating.

Couldn't play Sleepy's version of "HTHF" but Johnny's version sound pretty good to me... Grin

Cool. I used to play this when I worked in the record department of a UK chain store. That first wolf howl was always good to freak a few folks out, lol.

Thats a good one!, something about music from the 60s before the counterculture had such a pure sound.
Most of the older stuff ive heard growing up from my grandparents, the era where musicians were in it for the music then the money unlike today.
Have you ever listened to an american radio station today? rap,rock,country..they all sound the same, its a sham, no diversity just the same repetitive sounds over and over

Have been thinking lately, yes I remember the hits of the early/mid 60s, mainly the ones my sisters listened to (i.e., Lesley Gore, and later, The Beatles).
But what were MY favorites way back then?

I had three big favorites, starting at age 5 (1962)
Soldier Boy (Shirelles)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NYw83uAQig

At age 6, in 1963
he's So Fine (Chiffons)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rinz9Avvq6A

And at age 7, in 1964
My Boy Lollipop (Millie Small)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtthpER0k6s

Don't recall any particular favorite in 1965. However, in 1966 there was that song that blew my 9 year old mind:
God Only Knows

I love that song. It says everything in less than two minutes! Easily The Chiffons' best...

I couldn't agree more. After a big build-up with some fantastic music, the counterculture was an anti-climax. I reckon '66 was the last great year of that decade----just my opinion, mind.

I live in the Netherlands where the radio stations aren't too hot either!

I like George's "My Sweet Lord". Heard it in good radio staish back 10 yrs. Didn't know it's the Beatle & the title of song (I thought it's about favorite dog Milo), really liked the voice of singer, soft & beautiful. Will not link as you know what it sounds like. Inspired by the posts below about Chiffons (which song, ofc, I don't like, being non-fan of girl groups, find them lame).

Beats me that Danny & the Juniors weren't mentioned here.

Guess it's a generational thing. I grew up listening to lots of girl groups and still love to sing along with them.

HOWEVER...
Thinking about it, for some reason the girl groups in the 60s aren't as adventurous harmonically as, say, the BBs or the Four Seasons.
Not that we can't have wonderful harmonies - listen to the Andrews Sisters (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, or Bei Mir Bist du Schon) or, better yet, the Boswell Sisters (Crazy People, Roll on Mississippi).

It's not about ge-ge-ge-neration Tongue - to my ears, the stack of girl voices sound silly. Solo female artists - yes. Brother & sister a la the Carpenters - yes, as it combines both type of voices. The boy groups like BBs etc. sound good too. But when it's multi-girls, I don't like it. Exceptions: "Mr. Sandman" & some of the Supremes tunes. I like Diana Ross. But you're right that 60s girl groups not very interesting, they're kinda the same. I listened before to Andrews Sisters - not bad. If the poster "Ron" were here, you'd've good chat about them. He's big fan.

I could do a few days' worth on 1966 alone. I voted it the best year in rock during a radio station poll last year. I forgot what year actually won the poll.

Here is a sublimely great record, "Mr. Dieingly Sad" by The Critters.
