Imma need proof

Trust me, they're legit. I heard Mike even re-used the melody for "Wrinkles" years later...

Legit or not, i love em.  Smiley
I'm imagining a killer Beach Boys homage/parody, sleigh bells and whistles full on production.
the surfin' boys meet the psychedelicate beach.

If Mike had written the words for Smile.....

Not bad as parody though, made me chuckle a bit Wink

But really, would Mike have written nothing but inanely goofy, self referential lyrics?
I realize that, yes, he tends to do that these days, but back in '66 I don't think so.

In case you may not have been around, I am re-posting these long lost Smile lyrics that I discovered quite a few years back. Their exact origin is unknown even to me, but I can testify that they are 100% legitimate. I'm not at liberty to say who the author is reputed to be, except to say that, in very faint ink, I discovered the initials 'ML', barely legible, down in the right hand corner of the manuscript. Make of this what you will:

THE ELEMENTS

Fire, water, earth, and air,
Elements are everywhere.
On the beach, your car, and pad,
They’re not just a passing fad.
All around the world you see
The Elements in harmony.

The wind blows through her long blonde hair,
I smell her perfume in the AIR.
A girl like her is cool to find-
Mother Nature blows my mind.

Old Yeller is my shovel ride.
We’re tearin’ down the countryside.
Like Mother EARTH, it moves my soul,
When I’m moving the earth, and digging a hole.

FIRE hot as the summer sun,
Makes me think of fun fun fun.
Here comes that shiny red fire truck,
Guess that flame’s run out of luck.

Like waves that come a-crashin’ down,
Near sunny Honolulu town,
WATER’s cooling down the heat,
A glass of it just can’t be beat.

Fire, water, earth, and air,
Elements are every where,
At the local high school hop,
The drive-in and the record shop.
All around the world you see
The Elements in Harmony.

Ha!  Hilarious.  Why didn't Brian ask Mike instead of Van to write additional lyrics for BWPS?

I had been listening to Brian's version of "Child is Father of the Man", and I came up with a couple additional lines of dialogue for the second half of the verse, going something like:

Easy my child
It's just enough to believe
I believe (I believe)
I believe (I believe)
Out of the wild
Into what you can conceive (I'll see)
You'll achieve (What you can be)

I've also been thinking about how exactly it could've sounded if the Beach Boys recorded these lyrics back in 1966. I hear Carl singing the lead vocals in that same, kinda raspy, seductive voice he used for "Do You Like Worms" (specifically the line "Rock, rock, roll Plymouth rock, roll over"), with the "I believe" part echoed by the group in a similar fashion to the BWPS version. For the new lines I added (highlighted in bold), I imagine Mike singing them (his vocals panned hard left) in that same low, kinda nasally, but nice-sounding voice he used for the coda of "Leaving This Town". It all sounds beautiful in my head, it just shows how criminally underrated this song is compared to the rest of the SMiLE tracks!

Mrs Oleary's Cow:
Fi Fi Fire helmet maaaan
Fire helmet man! Fire helmet man!
(Repeat many times)

Mrs Oleary, it is enough to believe, I believe
That your damn cow hath caused the fire to conceive, now it's beef!
