Author Topic: CALLING ALL CREATIVE MEMBERS ON SMILEY SMILE! Let's write some lyrics!  (Read 5463 times)

I think as a community, we should summon our diverse and creative minds so we can join together and write missing lyrics for Smile! I highly doubt forgotten lyrics would ever show up again, and there may be come material that didn't have lyrics. It's hard to tell which material is which, but I believe for all future Beach Boy fans, we should decide here and now what they lyrics should be. Here is a list of the material that need/could use lyrics:

Child Is Father of the Man
The Old Master Painter
Tones / Tune X / I Don't Know
I Ran
Wonderful (Version 2 Tag)
Love to Say Dada (includes Part 1, 2, 3, 2 second day)
All Day
Tag to Part 1 (although I'm pretty sure it's Mama Says or With Me Tonight)

Feel free to leave contributions on ANYTHING at ANYTIME!

I'd like to start off with Child Is Father of the Man. I have the melody outline that I recorded here:
https://vimeo.com/182779362

Below are the lyrics

Chorus (repeats 3 times, with 4th chorus including only the last 2 stanzas)
Li-tle Bird up in a tree
looked down and sang a song to me.
Li-tle Bird up in a tree
looked down and sang a song to me.
Li-tle Bird up in a tree
looked down and sang a song to me.
Li-tle Bird up in a tree
looked down and sang of how it began-

Verses (4 lines each verse, repeats twice)
Little bird looked down and sang a sa-hong to me

Tag (3 lines)
Where's my pretty bird? He must have flown away.
If I keep singin' he'll come back some day-e-ay.

Stephen Kalinich said Brian wrote the lyrics for the Tag, so maybe we don't half to do much tweaking to these. Maybe he looked at the CFM lyrics and saw he could apply the Little Bird idea easily to them. For example:

Where's my little Boy? He must have ran away.
If I keep singin' he'll come back some day-e-ay.

And according to Dennis Wilson, he said Child Is Father of the Man's lyrics had something to do with Cowboys.

It's
Won-Won-Wonderful
And one one
Maybe it's one
And maybe not you
Maybe it's me
And maybe it's you
I'm wondering

The child is the father of man

Choir calls and
fog rolls
Overtold
every soul
Around us all
Ocean call
And everyone
That is told

And I ran

Over the brush
Light on the choir
So shines the light
And onwards the fire

Easy young child
It's all you'll believe
All that you hope
You'll achieve

And I ran

Child is father to the man

Avenue
Awaken you
All you do
And over through
And me and you
Everything
Is in tune

And I ran

These are great! I love the child lyrics as well! Are these lyrics just for I Ran and CFM? Could you possibly do a voice over, cause I'm having trouble matching them up with the melodies? But fantastic job! Thanks a lot!

I've written lyrics for I Don't Know as well.

Old Man Painter
Working on his latest creation
He's in love

Young Man
Other than
Painting on a canvas
Of love

I don't know
What he's thinking
When push comes to shove
He's in love
(He's in love)

But wind chimes rattling
Overhead a crow cries
It's calling
It's calling
It's calling
(Repeat to fade)

Not written by me, but I thought I'd post the amazing lyrics written by "Chris" for the Project SMiLE version of "Child is Father of the Man"

Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man

I feel, with each tiny little, every little breath
You’re getting older (older)
It seems, so long ago, you couldn’t walk, and all I really had to do was
Hold you (Ahh)

Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man

Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Do you know your ABC)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Won’t you sing along with me?)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Up and down, around we go)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Wait and stop, and no-one know)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Do you know your ABC)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Won’t you sing along with me?)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Up and down, around we go)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Wait and stop, and no-one know)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Do you know you ABC)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Won’t you sing along with me?)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Up and down, around we go)
(I will never come across again, the thoughts and dreams I had before I came a man)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Wait and stop, and no-one know)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Do you know your ABC)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Won’t you sing along with me?)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Up and down, around we go)
(I will never come across again, the thoughts and dreams I had before I came a man)
Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit (Ahh, ahh) (Wait and stop, and no-one know)

Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man
Child, child, child, the child is father of the man

Yeah I love that guys Smile mix, simply because it's crazy and doesn't care if it's decisions make no sense. And that probably might've been the kind of attitude Brian had at the time while making Smile. What were his sources (I know there must've been many) for his mix? Especially the original Part 4 Insert for Vega-Tables with Marilyn singing lead. Where can that bee found?

First off, thank you Scott!

Secondly, here are my lyrics for CIFOM

Hush now my child
Turn now to dreams
Over crowd
The candle burns
So frequently
Hopefully you'll see
And you'll be
And you're there

Saloon calls
And tumble weed
Stable side
And river streams
A cowboy's voice
Calling me
And nothing else
Is what it seems

Oh these are fantastic! I never would've thought to write of saloons and river streams! I wouldn't've been able to realize they're not mentioned in the other Smile songs! So these are just for the verses?

Yeah. The chorus is simply the "child" lyrics but these are the verses.
PS: Was that sarcasm? Haha

Oh no, I'm not good at sarcasm. I really do like your lyrics!

Also, I would like to simply present a theory that I have. Just a theory (I don't wish to offend anyone), on the Child vocals in the chorus: I believe they could just be background vocals. I mean, think about it. A song that repeats the "Child-Father of the Man" vocals for 4 bars, 3 & 1/2 times? I don't think Brian meant for that JUST to be it. But that's my theory, ya know? In the video I posted on my first comment on the thread here, I vocally demonstrated (terribly) how I believe the Little Bird melodies give us a clue into the forgotten melodies of the song. I like to go along with this only because it gives us Chorus, Tag and (in my opinion) better verse melodies to work with.

Wikipedia classifies it as an unfinished track and apparently vocal overdubs were recorded like Look but were lost so all we have to go on is the chorus. And thank you for the compliment Lee !

Awhile ago, a musician by the name of Jacob Borshard put together his own reconstruction of SMiLE with added lyrics, ukulele overdubs, and additional missing vocals. Here are his lyrics to "Tune X", retitled to "Boundless Love"

(first part is sung a cappella)
Out at sea, with our stores all spent
We searched in vain for the lost continent
Monsters aft and mermaids fore
We crack a keg and drink some more
Beer, cold beer
Gimme that root beer

Long ago, we sailed these waters
On tattered sails, an old wind fought us

Drifting on the sea, I felt a boundless love
Surely meant for me
And the one I long for

Margarita, where
Where can you be?

Beyond the fog, a sacred island (island)
There on the sand, with flowers smiling
Smiling

Drifting on the sea, I felt a boundless love
Surely meant for me
And the one I long for

Margarita, dance
Dance with me
(Backing vocals during the coda also mention Heroes and Villains)

You can find the entire reconstruction (which is pretty damn good BTW) here: http://www82.zippyshare.com/v/rruUeuhX/file.html

This thread should be renamed:

Three guys write lyrics for unfinished tracks

Well it's true.

Yeah boundless love is pretty catchy and I'll give Jacob some credit. However, I've always thought Tune X/Little Pad sounded a tad bizarre. Now Little Pad/Diamond Head is where it's at

In case you may not have been around, I am re-posting these long lost Smile lyrics that I discovered quite a few years back. Their exact origin is unknown even to me, but I can testify that they are 100% legitimate. I'm not at liberty to say who the author is reputed to be, except to say that, in very faint ink, I discovered the initials 'ML', barely legible, down in the right hand corner of the manuscript. Make of this what you will:

THE ELEMENTS

Fire, water, earth, and air,
Elements are everywhere.
On the beach, your car, and pad,
They’re not just a passing fad.
All around the world you see
The Elements in harmony.

The wind blows through her long blonde hair,
I smell her perfume in the AIR.
A girl like her is cool to find-
Mother Nature blows my mind.

Old Yeller is my shovel ride.
We’re tearin’ down the countryside.
Like Mother EARTH, it moves my soul,
When I’m moving the earth, and digging a hole.

FIRE hot as the summer sun,
Makes me think of fun fun fun.
Here comes that shiny red fire truck,
Guess that flame’s run out of luck.

Like waves that come a-crashin’ down,
Near sunny Honolulu town,
WATER’s cooling down the heat,
A glass of it just can’t be beat.

Fire, water, earth, and air,
Elements are every where,
At the local high school hop,
The drive-in and the record shop.
All around the world you see
The Elements in Harmony.

It's funny cause back when Darian and Brian were working on Smile in 2004, an early track list contained diamond head. The writing credits on that are vague. Brian gets the least. Maybe the rock sound effects in the beginning are Brian. It sounds like something he'd do.

Yeah. Wikipedia knows not much about Smile. There were (if I remember correctly) 3 vocal sessions for CFM, all running over several long hours. The song was definitely finished.

I see. Well I guess that's how it is. Brian probably wanted the track to be like that then and the horn in little bird was just a bit of a throwback

A girl like her is cool to find-
Mother Nature blows my mind.

Old Yeller is my shovel ride.
We’re tearin’ down the countryside.
Like Mother EARTH, it moves my soul,
When I’m moving the earth, and digging a hole.

FIRE hot as the summer sun,
Makes me think of fun fun fun.
Here comes that shiny red fire truck,
Guess that flame’s run out of luck.

Like waves that come a-crashin’ down,
Near sunny Honolulu town,
WATER’s cooling down the heat,
A glass of it just can’t be beat.

Fire, water, earth, and air,
Elements are every where,
At the local high school hop,
The drive-in and the record shop.
All around the world you see
The Elements in Harmony.

I'm curious. These actually do sound like something Mike would write... And they are good.
Go ahead and testify
