Do I hear the sound of an incoming fatwah ?
A fatwa (Arabic: فتوى) plural fatāwa , is a legal pronouncement in Islam, done by a law specialist on an issue. Usually a fatwa is issued at the request of an individual or a judge to settle a question where "fiqh," Islamic jurisprudence, is unclear. A scholar capable of issuing fatwas is known as a mujtahid.
The overwhelming majority of fatwas are on mundane matters (for examples see the archives linked below). Several have declared war or pronounced death sentences, most notably the fatwa for the execution of Salman Rushdie issued in 1989 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and the 1998 Fatwa proclaimed by Osama bin Laden declaring war against America. These two fatwa, in particular, have drawn a great deal of attention in Western media, which has given rise to the use of the term fatwa to apply to statements by non-Muslims that advocate an extreme religious or political position.

I don't think, though I could be wrong, that Billy or Aegir are Muslims, and I don't find their statements to be extreme. So, no, not yet, at least.

[sigh]
I was using the term 'fatwah' as a general term re: the reaction that the graphic may (or may not) have engendered. I assumed that since the Rushdie affair, most people were aware of what a fatwah is, and of its integration into western culture. Charles is obviously of the opinion that the rest of the board - myself included - required the benefit of his cut & paste skills. I can only assume he's a teacher, and that this was a Pavlovian reflex.

Nah, I'm not Muslim. That image was just a parody of this video game's box art.

I could assume, but I won't, the question "Do I hear the sound of an incoming fatwah?" and the use of the term "fatwah" were based upon some hope that the carefully worded question would invite said "fatwah." I can't speak to your first assumption, but your second isn't too off the mark-- I think it's a good thing we all understand what we are talking about, don't you? Understanding is nothing to fear or dismiss. Your third assumption is way off the mark, but then again, I'm assuming you were aiming for accuracy.
Who knows, maybe if the next message is just a little bit more dismissive, you might get the reaction you're looking for. The day is young!

I think (and I'm not the only one-- sorry, had to throw that in) the term "fatwah" was used not so much as part of a prediction, but as part of an attempt to incite a reaction.
In which case you, and your confederates, are entirely mistaken. Had I that design in mind I would have used something like, oh, "excommunication".
How many times have you used the word "idiot" or "moron" of someone who's exasperated you ? These terms are everyday coinage, yet in their original usage they were accurate medical terms (along with imbecile, and sometimes cretin) describing mental development, or the lack thereof. And in the UK at least, a lot of everyday saying have a very unsavory origin that is almost utterly unknown these days. A prime example is the term 'berk', meaning, well, idiot or the like. Originally it was a prime slice of Cockney rhyming slang, 'Berkshire hunt'. I'll leave you to work out the rest...

In case anyone's wondering why what's in my quote doesn't appear in Charles' last post, the answer is simple - this is what he posted before editing it.

Oh, yes, you do, and it's usually obvious why you choose the words you use. It's always fun to read the results.

I'm shocked and unsettled at this unexpected reference to the Bible. All I can say is, I'm watching out for craftiness, and looking to avoid the temptation to argue over matters long ago settled.
