Rocker, as you know, usually the pre-recorded track is an instrumental one, not a vocal one, although a vocal one has been done. Usually the vocal sweetening is done AFTER the performance. Are you saying that the group pre-recorded the song with their vocals only - it is an acapella song - and then simply sing along with/over their own vocals. Again, I saw it in 1985, not on YouTube, and it sounded 100% live. Anybody else have an opinion?

Well it is Brian doing a great job. The others are terrific too. I think the may have sang on top of pre-recorded vocals to get a full sound. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes though. BTW to me 1985 was the last time Brian seemed like a full member at least on TV and Record.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. And I think it's okay to do so. Better than Brian's falsetto cracking throughout the song.

Very cool, Beach Boy. I will have a look at that.

In the meanwhile: my plans to upload the Beach oys '75 footage will have to wait a few days (problems with one of the PC's again). But on the other PC there are some nice tubes as well.

REO Speedwagon - Roll With The Changes - performed live at Live Aid 1985
At the end the Boys provide some backing vocals. Although I hope one of them is not the one who's terribly out of tune.

Weighing in again on the inaugural footage...the way you can tell it's not live (or at least not completely live) is that all the voices are doubled.  To get that kind of sound you would need to have at least 3 other singers (doubling 4 voices...judging by the Carson clip from '84 Bruce would double Brian's high part when doing this song live, so you'd need to have doubles for the other 3 parts).  Given the looseness of the doubling the most logical explanation is they prerecorded the track and sang with it.  The only trick would be starting on time.  They probably had a click track that fed through their monitors to count in to the start of the song that only they could hear.

Don't know if this has been posted? This clip is crazy, Brian sings Spirit of Rocknroll at the piano then stands up and dances to the track!

This should be pretty interesting. Its a documentary from 1975 on the Beach Boys touring with Chicago.
The copy I have on tape seems incomplete, but nonetheless it's unique footage. Hope you'll like it...

In 2 parts.

In 2 parts, I'm going to upload some 81-82 live-footage (both video and pictures). The strange thing is that the audio comes from other sources. For instance Heroes & Villains from Hawaii 1967. Don't know the reason for this, but this is how I have it on tape.

Okay, the video-part is cleared up (I think). The BB played in Allentown twice in Sept. 1982. Probably these tubes are from the first of 2 shows of that day. See explanation on YouTube-comments in part 1. Still doesn't explain why someone edited other audio sources (my guess is that the concert itself was too horrible to hear). The videotape seems a bit speeded up, which could also be a reason to edit out the original audio. Whatever the reason might have been...

...here's part 2: Marcella & Let The Wind Blow (audio from In Concert 1973, pictures from 1982)

This looks like 8mm to me, so maybe no sound was recorded at all.

Heres a much better copy of Their Hearts were Full of Spring acapella 1984/85 with the intro intact..

http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Vy4eVYJQrs

I am displeased to hear about the double tracking or whatever.  I knew it sounded too good.  I always wondered why they went back to the studio to dub parts of live performances(Knebworth, Waikiki, etc..)..I never felt it was necessary even at their worst (long beach 1981?).

For comparison sake and from the same timeframe, I have the Boys on Graduation Day in 1984 from some TV performance with just a pre-recorded instrumental track and they sound just fine.  (can't find it on youtube)

For anyone who has ever seen the Campfire Sessions (sung beachfront around the campfire surrounded by family and friends with only acoustic/ bongos 'Party!' style..) which I think was 1986, they perform most excellent unrehearsed and off the cuff.  Their Everly Brothers Dream and Be My Baby from this set are amazing and are among my favorite of their live performances.  I can only imagine what went on in Murry Wilson's living room when they were kids or what they could sound like today if Mike would freakin' cooperate.....

I always wondered why they went back to the studio to dub parts of live performances(Knebworth, Waikiki, etc..)..

I can understand why they would GO BACK to the studio AFTER the performances. Brian, Mike, and sometimes Al could hit some real clunkers. It's not that unusual to overdub in the studio to CORRECT the mistakes. The 25th Anniversary Special (1987) and The Endless Summer TV Show (1989) are full of overdubbing. But they were TV shows. They had time to re-record before the shows aired.

Honestly, I never heard of The Beach Boys pre-recording their vocals and singing over them - BEFORE a live performance. And that Reagan performance was broadcast live. This is hard for me to accept for some reason. For the last 20 years I was believing that they really nailed that performance... police

Carl Wilson on (I think) the Tom Snijder show (that's what the tape-box mentions...)

Video-quality is so-so....but I like this live-version a lot.

Part 1 in which he performs Hold Me

Someone...PLEASE...upload Brian's solo rendition of "Good Vibrations" from Saturday Night Live 1976. I once uploaded the other 2 songs,  albeit in poor quality.

Part 2 of Carl Wilson at "Tom Snijder" as well.
An interview with the talkshow host, after which he performs Heaven as well...but unfortunately it's not complete....
When I bought this video the most interesting recording was at the very end of the tape....which happened to be 3 minutes too short! Not a pleasant surprise at the time...hope you like it anyway

The Beach Boys in an episode of the TJ Hooker Show. Mostly footage from a (I think) 1980-concert was used (4th of July perhaps?). But to make it look like a special guest performance some bits with Carl were added.
