Does anyone know what session this is from? Could it be for 'Can't Wait Too Long?' - it seems to have the same exact pitch as the intro to 'Can't Wait Too Long'

Thanks - I heard the instrumental of IWMTLH being played at 1:11 but it didn't sound like those harmonies would really fit in the song...but they seem to be a perfect match pitch-wise to that song. Another reason I asked was because the description on the video said it was from a 1968 session - maybe the uploader got the year wrong. Thanks again!

Well, now that you're saying..... I kinda wonder where in the song this shows up..... Maybe it was for an alternative vocal arrangement?

Towards the end you can hear Brian say "we're not using this for the track, we're just using this for a pitch thing" - so I really wonder how this recording would have helped with the song.

Perhaps it was a warm up for the unused insert that appears on the "Rarities" album?

I've never seen this before. This is the Beach Boys with Status Quo on a tv show apperantly called "Talking Telephone". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RieEj0JmqFs&feature=related

That was wrong on so many levels.  The drummer looked like a muppet, Bruce looked like a wax figure come to life and all the swinging and swaying combined with the rapid-fire editiing made me nauseous.  Maybe it's the crazy cold meds I'm on right now, but I felt like I was peeking into another dimension with this video!  Cool Guy

Here is something that is certainly new to me , Brian performing (Huh?) live on a US TV Show called 'The Spirit Of Rock And Roll' , rather good

and the performance of 'Surfer Girl' is very much like BB Stomp in 1988

I was expecting much, much worse stuff. But I am pleasantly surprised. But did they really use the original Beach Boys backing vocals for GOK? Well......

So bizarre hearing that "Sweet Insanity" Yamaha DX7 keyboard sound all over God Only Knows!  Thanks for that clip Rob; I also enjoyed that far more than I thought I would.  I find clips from the start of Brian's solo career in the late 80s to early 90s fascinating.  "Surfer Girl" sounded great, a few bum notes here and there but still very spirited.  I almost choked up when he said he felt "naked without the other Beach Boys" there!

Also, I gotta say: I unabashedly love the song "The Spirit of Rock n' Roll"!  What a shame the Sweet Insanity version is not available; underrated album.

It's odd how he almost seems more comfortable singing at center stage with the mic, than actually sitting down at the piano.  Grin

Funny how time changes things. Wonder what would happen now, if he had to stand center stage with just a mic.

First of all the Spirit of Rock and Roll TV show is a great find, never seen it before although I'd heard the audio to two of the songs from a Cousin Brucie thing I used to have. Two comments: Brian sounds really good on the "Surfer Girl" performance, much better than I expected and second, anybody else notice on GOK he song "God may not always love you"?

Brian did indeed sound incredibly good on Surfer Girl, considering the time period. His vocal was pre-recorded though. Pay close attention to his lips.  On another note, why on earth did Brian have to start smoking again?!?  Angry He had regained so much of his voice by 1991. Listen to the note he hits on the word "together" on TSOR&R. Beautiful.  Smiley

This is supposedly a radio promo for a Beach Boys concert in 1982. I have my doubts. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/10007162

I hadn't noticed that!  Whoa, that's weird.  Brian makes a bizarre face after he sings that line.  Either he:

1) Goofed, and was concentrating so hard on the song's title in his head that he started singing the title as opposed to the first lyric, and then looks out to the audience to see if anyone noticed.

2) Landy suggested that "God might not always love you" might be a more "edgy" lyric, and after Brian sings it he looks uncomfortably to Landy somewhere in the audience

3) (and this is the most left field suggestion) Brian is singing the altered lyric from his Beach Boys rewrite sessions with Tandyn Almer  Cool Guy
