This relatively unknown song played somewhat of a role in Smile:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs-oGEhDP0E

Anyone wanna explain this one to me? I've tried googling it but am not coming up with much other than vague mentions like the text in here.
I don't know the explanation for that. Sagittarius is like a supergroup of people involved with the Beach Boys. Glen Campbell sings lead on My World Fell Down and Bruce Johnston, Gary Usher, and Curt Boettcher are also on that track.

His phrasing is very mid to late 60s era Brian here.  Very cool find variable!  Cool to see that he still digs it every now and then.  Very much in line with that recent version of "Please Let Me Wonder".

Someone pulled the cool out of the boys in 1975 and never gave it back. Very sad.

Perhaps "anyone who doesn't find it cheesy is the question. The BBs were always--even at their coolest--cheesy. But since the late 70s, jesus. Just horrible.

...The BBs were always--even at their coolest--cheesy. But since the late 70s, jesus. Just horrible.

You know, I long for the day when I know you guys better, and know who I'm responding to in these posts.
I see that you post a lot, Luther, and know I've read you before.  I recently exposed my insecurities in posting here; it's sometimes difficult, not knowing how I sound.  I started out way in the beginning as an avid fan, then got swept up inside the Beach Boy world. Now, I've returned for the most part to being 'just a fan'.  (Count me among those who harbor hope that Brian still has his own "Rhapsody in Blue" in him).  So, while I know I'm often considered an 'insider', I am first & foremost a fan.

That being said, I wholeheartedly agree with you - from a fans perspective.  They began losing their connection with cool once they started detaching themselves from Dennis in the late 70's.  (Shoot, when they first ventured out without a Wilson on stage, they'd lost not only their cool, but their heads as well!)  Somehow, I think I even knew they weren't cool when I first heard them, going on fifty years ago now...  I could've cared less, though: would anybody ever sound as cool again as they did on "409"? I think, if memory serves me correctly, by the time I first heard that song, they'd already answered my question with "Shut Down", which was very quickly followed by "Little Deuce Coupe"!   (What a time to grow up, although it's typical of me that at first I didn't understand why they were called the "Beach Boys", when all they did were car songs.  It took me until summer arrived before I played the "flip" sides; ironically, while on the beach at Coney Island!)
When I first saw pix of them, it was so obvious; (heck, I'd already seen pictures of The Ventures;  maybe this Dick Dale was the only one of these west coast characters that might actually have a pair!)  What would we have called guys like these in Brooklyn back then: dorks?  I mean, that guy with the chipped tooth?  The one, obviously dentist material, who looked like he rather be in the Kingston Trio?;  And that one guy, he's going bald, for god's sakes!  There's only one of them that is obviously c_o_o_l, and that's you-know-who!
However, that was something that was always intriguing about them: the further they ventured from the west coast, the cooler they became...  Something that exists, even to today, which doesn't necessarily have to do with the ocean, or the west coast.  When Brian started changing & growing during the "Today" period, (ironically, featuring Dennis' "In the Back of My Mind" vocal), they may have started to loose what little cool they were briefly synonymous with when they were 'hip'.  To me, though, that was when they really began to have meaning in my life.  Fortunately, they haven't ever stopped!

OK maybe in the late 70's they were less than cool.

But damn, when the Beach Boys were cool, they were epically cool.

Especially the Wilson bros. Brian's a stlye icon of mine  Grin

I'd say this is the best The Honeys/Spring ever sounded as a group: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTKvdTXoW10&feature=related . I could see why the BBs thought Brian poorly produced some of their songs around that time. He could still do this in '69!

I always wondered if Brian did the string arrangement for this one.. probably no, right?

Where's AGD when you need him? We would need to know who got production credits. You know, we need something like the "bat signal" for Batman to call AGD in times of need, like when your at a coffee shop and suddenly wonder who played bass on "Palisades Park" or something.

Brian wrote the string part for "Time To Get Alone", right? So he could write string parts in that style.  Did he write the strings for "We're Together Again"?
