Next month Nonesuch will release the final album of Allen Toussaint's career, completed the month before his passing last November.  It has a ton of all-star guests but the on-topic one is none other than Van Dyke, who appears on two tracks - a version of Danza, Opus 33 by the 19th century composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (a very influential figure in the musical development of both artists) and Southern Nights.

It may seem surprising that Van Dyke would be cutting that old Glenn Campbell hit but as Toussaint says here, VDP actually inspired him to write the song way back when:

Thanks!

Didn't know about the Toussaint/VDP connection.

And some Gottschalk too, performed by VDP?
Well that puts me in the mood this lazy summery afternoon to listen to some Gottschalk (Bamboula, Souvenir de Porto Rico, The Banjo) and finish off with Mr Toussaint singing Southern Nights. Heavenly.

There are a couple of performances of amazing VDP arrangements of Gottschalk on VDP's Moonlighting: Live at the Ash Grove, "Night in the Tropics" and "Danza". Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff.

NPR First Listen has, at least for a little while, a link to listen to the entire American Tunes recording.

Among other sites, it can be accessed at bandwidth.wamu.org and scroll down to see the link
