I know not everyone on the board is a Jan and Dean fan but I thought I'd mention that Mark A. Moore-who is a Smiley member-has published a cool book on them based on his years of research/involvement with them-The Jan and Dean Record (McFarlane) and even if you are not into Jan and Dean themselves, Brian Wilson wrote the short forward to the book and is mentioned quite a bit within (as are the other BBs). This makes sense as in the 1960s the two groups had a lot of interaction. Personally-I am a much bigger fan of the BBs but I have come to appreciate Jan and Dean and so far this book is right up my alley-with session dates, AFM Sheets, concert dates, interviews with musicians that worked with them (in the 1958 chapter I see interviews with Arnie (Jan and Arnie) and Frankie Avalon, plus Jan and Arnie's first producer/manager. Well worth buying!

Very cool Ian! I'm not a major Jan & Dean fan, but I do love a whole bunch of their hits and a smattering of Jan's '70s material. So I might just have to check this out.

Here's a little more info: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,22652.0.htmlBTW I was just linked to the On The Run movie (unreleased) on youtube. I never saw it before and as far as I have watched it, I think it's really cool. "Look, a woman!"

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.- Lester Bangs on The Beach Boys PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LISTTo sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.- Jack Rieley

Jan & Dean were all about satire in the 60s... riding a wave that Zappa later perfected. A taste of it from their unreleased 1966 FILET OF SOUL LP rejected by Liberty. It was produced as a send-up of live albums. An edited version was featured on the 1972 Anthology album (side 4). It begins 50:06 into this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csWdUw_UzDE

"The Beatle part of our portion..." (Audience screams)... "Followed by a lot of Beatles--" (More screams) "and then we finish it up with a lot of Beatles--" (Hysterical screams)
Dean sings "Michelle" and the audience boos. Then they both sing "Whistling Dixie" and the audience roars with joy.
Around an hour and 5 minutes in... "Let's Hang On, Might As Well" and "Hang On Sloopy" as a great, hilarious finish...

for me-the main problem is that by attempting to be very topical a lot of what Jan and Dean did has become very dated-whereas much (though certainly not all) of the best of the Beach Boys material has a timeless quality to it. Still I think Jan came up with some very nice melodies (such as It's As Easy as One-Two-Three) and rockers like Bucket T and Surf City are boss.
