Does anyone have any info on the Beach Boys Convention 90? I never heard of that before!? What was it? All I know is that this unreleased beach boys song Down South To San Diego was featured there. Any info on the song too? https://youtu.be/aOExL4YcYZU

Written and performed by Alan Boyd. Not a Beach Boy in sight. Earshot. Whatever.

Edit: um... obviously you didn't bother to actually read the description of the video, or you'd not have asked the question you did. Here it is, and I've highlighted the relevant bits to assist your comprehension:

"In the early 1990s, Alan, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who had also been writing and producing music for a series of children's videos, was asked to write and record an original theme song for a Beach Boys fan convention. The result, 'Down South (In San Diego)' quickly became something of an 'underground' hit, with copies passing along amongst Beach Boys' fans all over the world - and the song itself was even included on a bootleg CD of unreleased Brian Wilson tunes. Subsequent recordings soon found their way into the hands of Beach Boys associates Jeff Foskett, Mike Kowalski, Gary Griffin, and Brian Wilson biographer David Leaf... which, in a very strange twist of events, led to Alan becoming directly involved with The Beach Boys as a documentary filmmaker and archivist."

... and folk wonder why, rarely, I get slightly piqued.  Grin

This song was on the first version of Sweet Insanity I heard in 1992.  I found out later it wasn't Brian but Alan Boyd.  It does sound very like Brian.  Alan, if you read this, maybe you could tell us the story behind it.  Who sang on it, wrote it for example?  Was it all you and do you have any more like this?

Cheers.  Grin

Edit:  I wrote this before I noticed AGDs edit in his earlier post.

I was at that convention. Picked up some real goodies.

Brian was heavily rumored to make an appearance but never showed.

So.... either...

1 - that's not Brian on the video, or...

2 - that's the 1992 ESQ Convention misdated... or

3 - you're confusing ESQ Conventions.  Grin

Alan, incidentally, does read this board from time to time, so maybe he'll chime in himself.

In the meantime, here's a nice performance:

Brian most certainly did appear and perform at the 1990 ESQ convention.  I was there.  Alan Boyd submitted "Down South in San Diego" as the theme song (he couldn't be there in person).

The Honeys appeared and performed at the 1992 ESQ convention.  Brian did not appear.  I was at that one as well.  Alan submitted "Everybody's Waiting" as the theme song for that convention.

In defense of the OP, that description on  the YouTube video is misleading.

In defense of the OP, that description on  the YouTube video is misleading.

But based on other threads in the Media section, and the YouTube links they point to, I believe Tim K who posted the YouTube video and The_Beach, the OP who started this thread, are the same person.  So he wrote that description...

Possibly 3. But I was there late morning and had to leave at like 2 pm for work. Arll these years I thought Brian didn't show. From the video, that certainly was the room I was in.

Excuse me ? Did I just read that right ? The guy who started this thread asking about the convention is possibly the same guy who posted the video ?  I know this is the world of The Beach Boys, but that's bizarre on about 17 different levels.
