I'd imagine that at least part the bonus discs will be of single versions/edits.

Well apart from some of the mediocre and even terrible moments on some soundtracks, this collection shows a fantastic body of work with some of the best music you can find. In fact it is quite an impressive catalog Presley left behind.
As you can see, they also include the Camden releases which were no albums per se but low budget releases with songs that weren't available (anymore). In fact "Burning love" appeared on such an album (which for some reason is not included).
I just hope they don't screw up again but when it comes to Elvis releases they usually do so.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

The better question, of course, is just who is this set aimed at? One could get behind the Complete Elvis Presley Masters set from a few years ago...but this? Surely one could make a few playlists for the ol' iPod with that set to approximate this one.

I really don't know. To tell you the truth, I'm not even excited for this. I just don't care. Maybe it is the last big one when it comes to physical product (CDs).
Anyway, Legacy has released some very good stuff on Elvis in the last years. As mentioned above, I really hope that they don't screw up anything. Since this set uses the masters it shouldn't be so hard but even that has been screwed with before when it comes to Presley releases.

BTW it's January 8th. Today marks Elvis' birthday.

Just saw the trailer for the new Elvis & Nixon movie, coming in April 2016.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udJrqAhDEmY

On a December morning in 1970, the King of Rock ’n Roll showed up on the lawn of the White House to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Nixon. Starring Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley and two-time Academy Award® winner Kevin Spacey as Richard Nixon, comes the untold true story behind this revealing, yet humorous moment in the Oval Office forever immortalized in the most requested photograph in the National Archives.

On another note, the Memphis Recording Service label will release a collection of all of Elvis' live recordings of the 50s, except the TV appearances.

This box set is the ultimate tribute to Elvis Presley documenting his shows from the 1950 s. The 3 CD's represent for the first time ever, a release of the complete archival live concert recordings by Elvis Presley in the 1950's. Including rare interviews and recently discovered new recordings, all of the 82 tracks have been painstakingly remastered and restored. The 172 page book is a photographic chronological journey following Elvis from the very first to the last shows performed in the 1950's. It contains linear notes, every show listing (now updated) and is accompanied by hundreds of photographs, many of which are rare and unpublished.

The link gives you more infos about the running time of the songs etc.

In March this year, Sony Music’s catalog division, Legacy Recordings will release The Album Collection, a limited edition 60CD Elvis Presley box set commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the release of Elvis Presley, The King’s first album for RCA…

This set is similar, but more lavish, than the acclaimed Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash boxes issued in the last few years and comprises 57 Elvis albums originally released on RCA from 1956-1977 as well as three new discs of rarities from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s respectively.

Of course, many of Elvis’s long-players have been expanded and repackaged for Legacy Editions, themed box sets and the like over the years, but his 57 original LPs – studio and live albums, compilations of non-album singles, film soundtracks, and even budget albums with hard-to-find material – have been reissued only sparingly during the digital era. The Album Collection presents – for the first time, in many cases – Elvis’s official, original albums as they were first released.

Legacy Recordings have promised fans that original album packaging has been “meticulously restored” for each of the discs included in with details including gatefold/die cut sleeves, original RCA Victor inserts and stickers, CD labels replicating original ‘side 1′ labels and more.

This collector’s box also includes a 300-page fully illustrated hard cover book featuring a commentary penned by Elvis Presley scholar John Jackson, discographies and recording session details (dates, locations, personnel, etc.) and more.

In addition to the 57 albums, this box set features three bonus CDs of rare tracks – new compilations, with each volume devoted to one of the decades; the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s.

Elvis Presley – The Album Collection 60CD box set is released on 18 March 2016.

For somebody who is missing the bulk of these albums, is this a good set to get everything in one place?

You could probably buy all the individual CDs for like $8 total.

What do you guys think is the best option? Keep in mind that I'd like to try to get original mixes, as they were originally released. I suppose if that's not the most convenient way to go, I'd consider other options.

That's the point that I also always have an eye on. If they release this stuff they just can't fool around with Elvis' mixes (the mixes that he chose and made sure that they sound like he wanted them to sound) and re-mix or use alternate versions.
Unfortunately, as I mentioned more than once and I won't get tired yet, Presley releases mostly always have a couple of major mistakes. I don't know if it's a lack of quality control but the music is obviously not what they care about. As long as there are a couple of new or nice pictures the sh!t will sell. That's very unfortunate but it seems like that's the way it is (no pun!). I'd love to be proven wrong but I have my suspicions. So, I'd wait for the first reactions before getting this set.

Maybe someone who has the Complete Masters set can say something about it.

I've already read that some of it is remixed, which is why I'm questioning it before I think about getting it. On the other hand, I've read that some of the original album mixes were terrible.

Most of those albums are fairly short; I guess if you're a completist that has to have the cd versions in the same packaging as the vinyl versions, this is the way to go, but it doesn't interest me.

Well, that could be on some soundtracks, although since a couple were only recorded on 3 tracks, remixing would be limited (if they have the tapes at all). And maybe the Aloha From Hawaii album. But I haven't heard anything yet.

The albums also have bonus tracks on this release. Personally I don't think that's very good. If you do a set with recreations of the original albums you should do exactly that. The singles should've been released as the bonus discs and maybe even could've gotten a release on their own for everyone who doesn't want to buy the boxset. I always wanted a compilation of Elvis' singles (which means also: single mixes if they differ from an album version).
