I'm trying, so far in vain, to convince folks in another thread to keep the tour discussion here in a central location. In the meantime, here's a YouTube link from the Sydney show:

Also, from Byron Bay:

I'll also try to start posting setlist links under tour dates as they come in. Only have a solid setlist for opening night so far.

I just wanted to let people know that the tickets for the Ottawa Jazz Festival show went on sale today and the site notes the following band members.  Darian and Scott are not listed.  As others noted, there will probably be some changing of band members during the tour.

Featuring:

Brian Wilson - Vocals, Piano
Al Jardine - Guitar & Vocals
Blondie Chaplin - Guitar & Vocals
Gary Griffin - Keys & Vocals
Probyn Gregory - Guitars, Horns & Vocals
Billy Hinsche - Keys & Vocals
Paul von Mertens - Horns & Vocals, Musical Director
 Michael D'Amico - Drums
Nelson Bragg - Percussion & Vocals
Nick Walusko - Guitar & Vocals
 Robert Lizik - Bass Guitar
Matt Jardine - Vocals & Guitar

What's most surprising is that they're providing a full manifest of backing band members on the show's website. I rarely see that sort of detail. Usually, we're lucky if they remember to put Al and Blondie's name on there.

Nah, it's not a big thing. I just look at the board less as a real-time chat sort of thing (it does that too of course) to ruminate about exciting recent events, and more as a permanent repository for info for years to come.

Secondary threads aren't a big deal to me, but when a tour's "opening night" thread understandably gets a lot of attention and starts being followed up on with reports on additional shows, all with a non-descript thread title, then that info will be buried five years from now when someone tries to look up the 2016 tour.

There's TONS of amazing info on this board, and some of it *is* buried in tangential discussions and threads under sometimes non-descript thread titles. The search function always has limitations, so a big thread with a clear title helps especially with things like tours.

I was just trying to politely steer conversation to the tour thread, knowing that people will invariably simply only sometimes selectively read posts in a thread.

But I haven't heard any firm reports as to whether Blondie sang *all* of "Funky Pretty" or not. It's weird though, that they bring him out on tour and don't just give him four songs instead of three. He's presumably going to travel the world for 80+ shows to come on stage for three songs per night (plus some encore numbers), so why not just make it four at least?

It seems odd to me that they don't have him on stage for the whole show (or at least the first set), adding backing vocals and guitar since he's there *anyway*. He played and sang on those songs in Beach Boys shows for three years in the 70s, so it's not like he can't do it...

True, that surprised me on the 2015 tour. It kinda made some sense on the 2013 tour, where Blondie was only popping in on select dates.

I do think there are some songs where Blondie wouldn't be needed, such as the PS songs not heavy on guitar. But they could certainly have him up there for *some* additional songs.

I've always wished they'd give Al and Blondie quick solo sets, even if just 1-2 songs, either together or apart. It would make the shows longer without running Brian ragged.

I really, really, really loved seeing David Marks play the guitar solo lead on the song "Pet Sounds" in 2013 at The Greek Theater, and I will probably miss that the most from the upcoming PS tour.

That was a melding of eras of the band that worked brilliantly, expertly executed in a very emotionally impactful manner.

Still cannot wait, even if Dave isn't there. I hope Dave is doing well.

I was at the Sydney Opera House show last night in Sydney. I'll post some more later when I have time. Some observations:

1) I was at Homebush Arena for the Beach Boys 50th Anniversary World Tour Show in Sydney in August 2012. That show was outstanding, great musicians. This show was easily its equal
2) The Opera House is a great venue for this type of show
3) To do the greatest hits, have an intermission, and then do Pet Sounds...and then a six song encore, it blew me away.
4) I went to see Jeff Buckley in 1996 at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, then he passed away tragically the year after. In the same way, I think if anything were to happen (although I wish nothing to happen to our beloved Brian), he is 74 soon, and if this is the last Beach Boys/Brian Wilson show I ever attend, I can die satisfied!

"It's more blessed to give than receive"

“For me, making music has always been a very spiritual thing, and I think anybody who produces records has to feel that, at least a little bit. Producing a record . . . the idea of taking a song, envisioning the overall sound in my head and then bringing the arrangement to life in the studio . . . well, that gives me satisfaction like nothing else.”

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

Thanks for the report. Please post the setlist if you were able to take it down. I'm in particular interested if they tried out "Leaving this Town" or changed anything else from opening night.

Looking at a youtube clip from last night. Same as Auckland but looks like 'Darlin' was added.

About 2.10 in. Darian lead.

Brian has the best group thing going at the moment, but if both camps could just pull it together. damn!
they are even doing a similar setlist these days.  Brian has incorporated the car/surf hits, and Mike has included
deeper and rare cuts.  They are almost on the same plane that it's not even funny.

Judging from last night, though, they're still wildly different shows.  I'm trying to imagine an official Beach Boys ever pulling out "Wake The World", "Honkin' Down The Highway", and "Funky Pretty" in the same set...!

Cheers,

Yes, I was surprised too! I've never seen that before. It kind of even surprises me that that level of detail would be released to the venue.

I'm happy that I'll get to see Billy Hinsche, as I've never seen him before, but will really miss Darian. I hope he'll be at some of the other East Coast shows.

I'll try to post my thoughts from the first night at the Opera House later today in the main tour thread!  In brief:  Brian had an off night, the band pulled together around him, but the sound mix up in the rafters of the Opera House still sounded wonky...

The setlist posted on the bw.com site:

This was the Opera House setlist on the 29th as well, with one addition!  Darian pulled out "Darlin'" -- either before or after "One Kind Of Love", my notes aren't clear.

Still no Leaving This Town.

Thanks for the confirmation. Was "Then I Kissed Her" performed? Someone removed that song from the 9/29 setlist on the setlist.fm website.

I think it's odd that they would do Leaving This Town as it was not written by Brian and he probably had nothing to do with that song when it was recorded.  It would be cool to hear but I'm just not sure if it's appropriate for a Brian Wilson concert.  Wild Honey makes a lot more sense.
