someone else can answer this better, but in general, the studio chatter gets vastly abridged on the boxset. Lots of takes are shortened to just one or two on the boxset. A couple pieces of Child is Father of the Man got left off, unfortunately. Im not sure offhand if thats the case with other songs.

Here's a quick run-down for you.  Most of the mixing is different, so we are focusing on recordings.  Anythign that is exclusive to Unsurpassed Masters 17 is notated at NOT ON TSS.  Anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

SOT 17, disc 1
1.  Heroes And Villains Theme (take 14) 0:51 *
2.  Heroes And Villains Theme (take unknown) 1:06 *
These two are the same as Disc 3 Track 2 (DYLW pt 2 aka Bicycle Rider Theme)

6.  Heroes And Villains (part 1 - 4th vocal overdub) 0:47

8.  "In The Cantina" (vocal overdub take unknown) 0:38 *
Mono mix of Disc 2 Track 16, Cantina Section with overdubs.

Exact same mix of Gee -> Heroes and Villains pt2 as found on Disc 4 Track 24

11. Heroes And Villains (last part - mono mix) 1:13 *
Mono mix w/ vocals of Heroes and Villains fade (aka False Barnshine) as on TSS

12. Heroes And Villains (last part - stereo mix) 0:40

I have to admit, I was very disappointed that TSS didn't have the "Do You Like Worms" cough.

BTW, the liner notes in Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17 absolutely SUCKED.

12. Heroes And Villains (last part - stereo mix) 0:40
NOT ON TSS Never could figure what this is, if it is really an unused section of H&H.  Anyone?

I'm 99% sure that was recorded for Can't Wait Too Long in late 67-early 68. Isn't it even featured in the CWTL music collage released on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey two-fer?

Yep, the grouping.  It's really cool, one track would be in instrumental + Brian's first overdub.  The next track would be the instrumental and the previous vocal part + a new one.  And so forth.  That's why I grouped them together.

This is time consuming, so stay put.  Here's disc two.

SOT 17 disc 2
1.   Child Is Father Of The Man (part 1 - takes 1-4) 4:51
2.   Child Is Father Of The Man (part 1 - take Cool 0:40
NOT ON TSS.  More takes here than presented on Disc 3 Track 16

3.   Child Is Father Of The Man (verse - takes 1-10) 1:36
Stereo mix of Child Interlude as on Disc 3 Track 16.

4.   Child Is Father Of The Man (take unknown) 0:59 *
NOT ON TSS.  mono instrumentalist mix of Child piano demo

5.   Look (takes 1 & 2) 1:22
6.   Look (takes 4 & 5) 1:08
7.   Look (takes 6-13) 2:10
8.   Look (takes 14-19) 1:06
NOT ON TSS.  Many takes not on TSS

9.   Look (take 20) 2:49
As heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 15

10. Vega-Tables (part 1 - piano track) 1:29 *
11. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub) 1:31
12. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub attempt) 1:28
13. Vega-Tables stereo (part 1 - instrumental & vocal overdub attempts) 1:30
14. Vega-Tables stereo (part 1 - instrumental & vocal overdub attempts) 1:30
15. Vega-Tables stereo (part 1 - instrumental & vocal overdub attempts) 1:30
16. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub attempts) 1:35
17. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub attempts) 1:35
18. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub attempts) 1:33
19. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal overdub attempts) 1:34
NOT ON TSS.  Vocal overdub and bouncing of multiple vocal tracks on the assembled Vege-Tables piano track.

20. Vega-Tables (part 1 - instrumental insert takes 1-8) 5:13 *
NOT ON TSS.  Multiple attempts of the organ overdub featured on the final verse of the Smiley Smile Vege-Tables

21. Vega-Tables (part 1 - vocal insert rehearsals) 1:08 *
NOT ON TSS.  Rehearsal and/or a capella verse section

25. Vega-Tables (part 2 - 2nd vocal overdub) 1:25
ALT MIX Stereo vocal overdubs on first chorus section, as heard on Disc 3 Track 24

So there you go...  for completists, both Unsurpassed Masters 17 and The Smile Sessions are essential.  SOT17 has multiple alternate takes and tracking sessions not present on TSS, but TSS has a bit better soundquality and some more finished mixes not on SOT17.

Nice sonic - for completeness how about doing Vol 16 which if I remember also has some things not on TSS?

And it might be nice to catalogue the instrumental takes that TSS has that are missing from Unsurpassed Masters.  What we need to do is compile from UM and other boots AND TSS The most complete chronological record of the Smile sessions.  TSS complete and Unedited, at least based on the sources available.  There are still vault items that could be released - like a stereo You're Welcome, stereo Barnshine with vocals (or was it stero Barnyard with vocals) - this may inspire me to go back and listen to everything I have Smile related yet again!

Uuuuugh you guys will be the death of me!!

Unsurpassed Masters 16 is interesting, because it's essentially the same core recordings as Disc 1 of TSS, but different mixes.  SO I have decided to add a new notion ALT MIX to denote as such.

Unsurpassed Masters vol 16

01. Our Prayer [1:05]
Stereo mix as heard on official 20/20 album

02. Heroes and Villains  [2:55]
Mono Cantina mix as heard on Smiley Smile bonus track and TSS 2CD edition as Heroes and Villains part 1

03. Barnyard [0:54]
ALT MIX Mono mix of Barnyard with backing vocals (Disc 2 Track 4 lacks backing vocals; Disc 1 track 6 adds lead vocal sync)

04. Do You Like Worms [4:05]
ALT MIX Stereo mix with multitracked vocals on assembled backing track (no spliced-in Bicycle Rider Chorus).  Additional vocal track chatter/errors as compared to TSS Disc 1 Track 4.

05.  The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine [1:10]
Stereo instrumental backing track, as heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 6

06.  He Gives Speeches [1:10]
ALT MIX Alternate stereo mix than heard on TSS Disc 1 Track 24

07. Wonderful  [2:06]
ALT MIX Alternate stereo mix of "Rock Me Henry" version than heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 12

08.  Child Is Father of the Man [1:45]
ALT MIX Alternate Stereo mix than TSS Disc 1 Track 11 and Disc 3 Tracks 16 & 17

09. Cabbin Essence [3:31]
Stereo mix as heard on official 20/20 album

10.  Look [2:40]
Stereo mix of take 3 as heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 15

11.  Good Vibrations  [3:39]
Mono version 1 as heard on TSS Disc 5 Track 23

12.  I Wanna Be Around/Friday Night
Stereo mix as heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 21

13. Vege-Tables [3:28]
Mono Mark Linett 1993 mix as heard on Good Vibrations box set

14. Wind Chimes [2:26]
ALT MIX  Stereo mix of 1966 backing with vocals (Disc 4 track 5) + mono tag (Disc 4 Track 6)

15. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow [2:34]
Stereo mix of Organ Waltz as heard on TSS (Disc 2 Track 30) + NOT ON TSS Stereo Mrs O'Leary's Cow take 8

16. I Love To Say Dada [2:25]
NOT ON TSS  stereo mix of Water with multitracked vocals + mono mix of I Love To Say Dada as heard on Good Vibrations box set

17. You're Welcome [1:05]
Mono mix as heard on TSS Disc 1 Track 20

18. Surf's Up  [5:20]
Stereo backing track as heard on TSS Disc 3 Track 18 + mono mix of Brian solo piano demo as heard on Good Vibrations box set.

That Wind Chimes stereo mix on UM 16 is my favorite version of the song and the closest to how Brian would have completed it for Smile (vs the BWPS and TSS arrangement).  And we have the nice mono mix version on the GV box set!

Shortly after TSS appeared someone very kindly put together a PdF identifying what was new and what essentially matched what we already had on the various boots. Can't access that today but maybe someone could provide an upload?

I just noticed Jason did this on a reference thread already.  Maybe an update or any corrections to what he has would be useful?  He also used Secret Smile and some other boots as sources.

OK I am working on this.  No idea how long it'll take, this is actually really time consuming!

I just noticed Jason did this on a reference thread already.  Maybe an update or any corrections to what he has would be useful?  He also used Secret Smile and some other boots as sources.

Do you have a link to that reference thread?

Also, another member here  emailed me the other day to tell me  the track of Barnyard from  the 5 CD promo set for Smile Sessions is different from the released version (and the version on UM 16) in that: it has backing vocals. and, has a count in, is a few seconds longer and has better sound quality than UM16.

I don't follow everything Smile related here/anywhere, but is this also  in the reference thread?

Oh, I thought you meant compiling an audio version of this!  Man, and I've spent the last few days merging my Smile Sessions with Unsurpassed Masters 16 and 17, Vigotone, Archaeology and Secret Smile, then organizing them by recording date!

Hadn't heard of a physical 5cd set - thought it was previewed for press etc on a secure online stream, to prevent leaks?

Anyone have this?

Yeah, the preview was tightly controlled and I thought no physical sets were distributed and that it was not possible to make a digital copy of the preview.

But that is definitely one of the more obvious missing tracks from the Sessions set - Barnyard with backing vocals!
