Hank Williams movie gets Nov. 27 release date

A new movie based on the life of Hank Williams will "see the light" right after Thanksgiving.

"I Saw The Light" is coming to theaters Nov. 27. Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers," "Thor") portrays the country music legend.

The British actor spent a month in Middle Tennessee last year, living with Americana favorite Rodney Crowell as he learned how to channel Williams' sound and performance style. He made a surprise appearance with Crowell at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan, performing Williams' "Move It On Over."

That tune was a big hit with the crowd, and on YouTube, but one viewer was highly critical — Williams' grandson, Hank Williams III. The musician addressed Hiddleston directly in a Facebook post.

"You got no moan or soul in your voice," he wrote, and shared a clip of his own live performance of "Move it On Over."

"Light" also stars Elizabeth Olsen (as Williams' first wife, Audrey Williams), Bradley Whitford, David Krumholtz and Cherry Jones.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I'd have to unfortunately agree with Hank III.  The guy completely misses the point of the song and turns it into a Karaoke contest.  Hank was a bluesman

I have a lot of respect for Hank 3. If it's not good enough for him, I'll be passing on it. That said I have an aversion to biopics anyway.

Well, I like some of Hank III's stuff and he definitely looks and kinda sounds like Hank sr. But imo he's not very original but rather an imitation of Hank sr. Some of his "ideologic" talk/songs gets on my nerves as well.
Haven't heard too much of her yet but I think his sister has more of a style on her own.

Just to get into the mood, here's Hank jr.'s recording of "I'm so lonesome I could cry" which was featured in "Your cheatin' heart" starring george Hamilton as Hank sr. (pictures are shown in the video)

Anyone here who saw that Woody Allen movie will agree that he looks like Fitzgerald in a cowboy hat. Not a good sign.

Some method acting could've helped. Do they still make chloral hydrate (and what the hell was chloral hydrate anyhow) ? Sounded like something you huff from a rag.

How about a movie about Billy Joe Shaver. Documentary concert ala "I just wasn't made for these times. "

I'll give it a go. He's a good actor. If I want to hear the real Hank, I'll dust off the recordings. Always thought Hank III was a bit of a joke anyhow. A really lucky guy.

I will too. People praised Joaquin Phoenix's singing in "Walk the line" (for whatever reason - I still wonder why they didn't use Cash's recordings. Maybe they thought "Well, he doesn't look like Johnny, so he doesn't have to sound like him either...") so I would be surprised if anyone really compares about Hiddleston's singing (although it's obvious that he's not a singer).
BTW here's a live performance of "Hey good lookin'" by Hiddleston:

and him singing "Why don't you love me":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZSEFZmBsIQ

I don't know about the source for this.

And I don't really mind the accent from what I've seen in the trailer. It is ok. That said, if it goes into cinemas worldwide, I will probably see a german synchronisation before I get to watch the original anyway.

And the more I get to know about Hank III the more I agree. Hank jr. has that laughable side in him as well (but boy, that son-of-a-gun seems to play any instrument you hand him!). But he also wrote some songs that almost hold up to his daddy's imo. Hank III looks and sounds a lot like Hank sr. but all of his behaviour and attitude etc. is ridiculous. Now if his music would justify it, that would be another thing. But as far as I got to know his stuff (and I'd be happy to change my mind about that) he just seems like a Hank-wannabe.
It must be hard though to have to grow up in the shadows of Hank Williams. And in case of Hank III in the shadows of Hank sr. and Hank jr.
From the little I heard, I probably much more prefer Holly Williams (daughter of Hank sr.). She at least doesn't try to be her granddaddy, although some of her stuff is too mainstream Nashville-country imo. And let's not talk about Jett Williams' singing too much...  Cheesy

From Bear Family:

1-CD-Album Digipak (4-plated) with 43-page booklet, 33 tracks. Playing time approx. 84 mns. At last! The greatest singer-songwriter in country music history finally joins the Bear Family roster! This is the first anthology in more than fifty years devoted to Hank Williams' uptempo juke-joint classics! Packed with 33 tracks, its including 17 Top 10 country chart hits, all digitally remastered from the best-available source material. It includes rarely-heard demo overdubs by his Drifting Cowboys and the late Don Helms, plus an unexpectedly rocking take on Fool About You. 'Rockin' Chair Money' is the first new compilation of Hank Williams' uptempo classics since M-G-M's 'Honky Tonkin'' album from 1957. Starting with his original Sterling recording of Pan American, this collection showcases classics from virtually every point in the singer's six-year recording career along with some unexpected, seldom-heard treats, including a guitar-only demo of 'Ten Little Numbers' and a full-tilt rockabilly overdub on 'Fool About You'. Six other posthumous overdubs feature sympathetic backings from Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys and steel guitarist Don Helms. Part of Bear Family's acclaimed 'Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight' series, this 33-track collection is perfect for parties and road trips. Dave Samuelson provides an overview of Hank Williams, his songs and the recording sessions.

Cheesy

I agree, Holly is where the talent went.  Hank Jr. is incredibly talented though, probably more so than his father in about any number of ways, but Sr. was the one who started it all...

Basically the way I see it

Hank Jr. couldn't get out from his fathers shadow, he even had to dress like him as a teenager for shows his mom set up.  So even when he went more into his 'outlaw' stuff he still had this looming homage of his father everywhere, he mentions Sr. in practically every song.  This held him back a little bit but was pretty much unescapable so he embraced it and did what he could with it.  Probably the most talented Williams...

Hank III basically tried to run a gimmick to escape, but yet still use the legacy, so he tries to make everything have a punk or rockabilly vibe to it.  This limits his music so much that it makes it all sound like a cover band doing a pastiche or something

Holly Williams is able to shine because she's a female so that separates her from the obvious comparisons and allows her to show off the songwriting side.  Also she has the best voice, obviously, of any of them.  I like that she doesn't try to write like her family, she just writes with the same inspiration as her family, it gives her a pretty authentic sound.  I just wish she'd get more opportunities, I think she could be running Nashville given a little more exposure.  She's go the talent, the songwriting, the singing, the look, and the story.
