In these cases, I go by the release date.  Since Sunflower was released in 1970, it's a 70s album. 

Love and Mercy was filmed in 2013, but when the movie in written about, it will be referred to as "the 2015 film Love and Mercy." 

Same rules apply. 

So, Lee, your choice is good, and for that matter, I probably should've put Surf's Up as my favorite 70s track.  It was released in 1971, and Carl did record his leads in the 1970s (and did Brian in the coda).

As a song?  Or as an album Sam?  I always felt that they hadn't really found their sound with the first album.  Then Brian took charge and there it was.  I MUCH prefer album 2 to album 1.  Surfin USA and Shut Down are both just oozing with energy, power and a whole new vocal direction NO ONE had ever applied to Rock 'n' Roll before.

[Not sure what the rules are...If it's release dates...I'l backtrack to Surf's Up for My 70's song.]

It's weird how people think of different songs. I put "Surfer Girl" as favorite surfing song, but then I thought that it really wasn't a surf song. Same for "I Get Around" and "Don't Worry Baby" as "car" songs.
edit: Oh, and of course Surf's Up as a 70s song!
