I came across this in the Vancouver Sun, I didn't realize that Dennis was out in the desert with Manson in 1973.

Given Charlie was in custody and on trial during the "SITS" sessions, I'd sincerely doubt the accuracy of his recall.

It's funny you bring that up, JB. Some years ago, I read a Terry Jacks interview in a book c/o Vancouver R&R in the 60's/70's. He mentioned the Seasons sessions, going into a recollection of how excited everyone was about the track yet Brian was extremely uneasy and wary of him. He went on to opine that Brian viewed him as an interloper and feared that he would become the new producer of the group. At least that's how he saw it at the time.

The sessions were in 1970, not 73.

Late July/early August 1970, to be exact, in the midst of the Manson trial. Since many of Manson's extended "family" were still on the outside and reportedly using scare tactics to intimidate Dennis into not testifying, that's the likely explanation for the broken windows anecdote. Perhaps Dennis was trying to hide out in the desert to escape them.

Yeah, I’m sure he’s just mixing up years. To me, as a student of the band’s history, it’s easy to be aghast at mixing up 1970 and 1973. But for these guys who lived through all of that, I can see how they wouldn’t know or care. There’s stuff where I could easily mistake 1997 for 1994 or whatever.

Interesting sidenote; this new 2-CD Jacks compilation includes his original recording of “Don’t Fight the Sea” (aka “Y Don’t Fight the Sea”). Took years before I could even find a crackly YouTube vinyl rip of his version of that song. My recollection is that it’s pretty much all verses. Perhaps it was the choruses that were Al’s main contributions to the song (in addition to adding/changing the lyrics on the final verse).

I listened to the original recording on YouTube. I wonder if the Bee Gees heard his version at some point before 1979.

I've just ordered this compilation, $29 from his site to the UK.
