There's a newish piece written by Dale Carter in 'American Studies in Scandinavia'
37,1 (spring 2005) pages 16-33, called "Bypassing the Consumer: Popular Music,
Poplore, and the Idiosyncratic Path of Van Dyke Parks"
I don't know if it's online yet or will be, but I'll let you know when I know.

Dale Carter tells me that his essay isn't on-line. So if interested you would have
to order a copy from the nearest academic library. In the meantime here's a link

That was a good read, but I wish the writer had elaborated on the political differences VDP and BW had over the songs.  What could BW object to?
