i'm guessing the indian on the cover is a connection to both...but are they connected to smile in any certain way? like the indians on horses riding away?

Nope - according to Carl, their uncle (which one, I have no idea) told the three Wilson brothers that an Indian spirit was watching over them. Thus, when it came time to pick a logo for Brother, they chose "Appeal to the Great Spirit".

The cover image for Surf's Up was chosen by Ed Thrasher... or Jack Rieley, depending on who you choose to believe.
