I just noticed, after owning it for 3 years, my copy of the Smile Sessions has a typo on the back cover of the sleeve with the black and white photo, and zodiac signs. Villains is spelled "Villians" on Heroes & Villains. Are they all this way? Were the original printings for the vinyl jacket back in '67 this way? Do I own a unique anomaly that is worth millions?  Wink

Mine has 'villians'.  And by one of those odd coincidences there is such a word according to the Urban Dictionary:

"Villian
To be notorious for being better than everyone. to always be in the top of something they have accomplished."

Sounds like a fair enough description of Brian to me.

It was spelled that way on the tape boxes, I believe.

SO....  perhaps VDP, with his command of language, purposefully spelled it that way?

If VDP wrote Viilians, there'd be no reason for the art department to change it, would there?
Perhaps someone could ask VDP, if one can catch him in a good mood, to ask a SMiLE question

That was the spelling on Brian's original handwritten track list (probably in Carl's hand) and the typewritten tracklist and the original artwork proof. My understanding is the proof is marked up for correction but for correcting that spelling.

So the way it worked in Capitol in 1966/7 was the proof would have been shown to the Legal Dept., what I think they called Editorial Dept., I think the Art Director and the Producer for sure and signed off on by each of them. So maybe none of them felt or realized it needed correction.

After taking a lot of LSD, I figured out that it was done to send a message.  A. I. stands for artificial intelligence.  I. A. stands for intellegence artificially.  Which means that...Paul McCartney had recently died in a car accident and was replaced by an imposter.  Smiley

Have you seen one (or a pic of one) on which it was spelled correctly though?  Grin

… and that other misspelling:

So not only was "villians" [purposefully?] misspelled all those times, but so was "heros". Never noticed that before.

How is it spelled on the AFM sheets?

Wiktionary lists as sole definition for "villian": "Misspelling of villain". Smiley

My original vinyl issue (SS) is in a box in my basement. Does anyone  have their copy handy? How is it spelled on the label?

It is. The SMiLE back cover has never been finalised, the Smiley Smile cover obviously has.
