This image has been popping up in better quality/no watermarks for a while now, but a recent Vox article on the Pet Sounds 50th included what is probably the full resolution image:

That's awesome. Down to the freckles, that pic is high res!

The things you notice once a pic is high res like that:

Has everyone who is in the background of the photo been identified? Is that Terry Melcher at right?

Were those Brian's Marlboro's? I just noticed they have the Surgeon General's warning on them, which apparently then was a brand new thing, implemented in 1966. And for some reason, the pack is being used to prop up the studio intercom.

And dig the many footprints that are on the desk that Brian is leaning on. Those look like they came from Converse All Stars. Who was standing on that desk, and why?

So we have conformation here that the Beach Boys did "Long Promised Road" in 1983? I know Carl did the song at his solo gigs in 1981 and 1983, and I know that they had worked Carl's "What You Do To Me" into 1983 selists, and also that they had been doing a couple "Surf's Up" songs on that tour ("Lookin' at Tomorrow" and "Disney Girls"), but I didn't know they had ever worked "Long Promised Road" back into the Beach Boys' setlist in 1983.

It makes sense in this context, a 3-song "Surf's Up" mini-set. They also apparently did a three night stand at Pine Knob in 1983, so that would have given them a bit more leeway to change up the setlist (to the small degree they were willing to back in the 80s).

I sourced this from the Carl Wilson - Heart and Voice of an Angel Facebook page and it's credited from Micheal G. Bush. So it's possible.

It does make sense though.

Good move to post it here, B-I.

They all look happy, so someone must have been doing something right.

Anyone know for sure who the other two are? Is that Alexandra Morgan?

There are some more (possibly familiar) pictures here:

That wildest western logo on the Brian pics is the photographer's stamp. If you pay him or her to use the image they send one without it.  It's the standard industry method now.

Carl stayed close to a telephone during sessions for "Surf's Up" as Brian's bedroom as just above the studio and he would often call downstairs with suggestions. (1971)

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
