Brian wasn't seen publicly with gray hair at the time, but he was sometimes bleached blond. And he probably was graying, it just was covered up. The photo just doesn't look like any of his photos from 98 -- that would have been Imagination era, and he had a specific look going then.

But I'm thinking about it ... and I just don't know. I don't think he was ever quite that gaunt in the late 90s. On the other hand, that's definitely his hairstyle from the time. Hum.

Okay -- here are some white/blond streaks in a Landy-era photo. Brian's heavier, though.

It's either from the time that picture was taken, or after 1998.

Wait a  minute....that's from the Don Was documentary! Oh wait...never mind. He's not that fat in this one. Man, why did Brian get so fucking big in 1995 all of a sudden? That was odd.

Indeed it was.

This is why Melinda put him on tour. He was eating everything in the house!

(Seriously, though, psychotropic meds can cause weight issues, and all of his were being changed around this time. I suspect that was one of the basic causes.)

My God...he looks like he did pre-Landy, minus the beard. He looked like someone photoshopped Murry with John Goodman.

I've seen a picture of him from around 1995 where he looks much worse, believe it or not. It was at a Beach Boys show with John Stamos.

I don't know how to post pictures here, so I'm going to go about this the long way around. Go into the Yahoo! search engine, and type in "The Beach Boys John Stamos", and click on images. It's on page one, third column down, second picture from left.

It's from John Stamos's website, but the website doesn't seem to be working. The picture still works, oddly enough.

This is the cached screen grab -- I'll try to find something bigger, but Stamos's site is offline at present.

There are also a couple pics of Brian, Mike, Carl, and John Stamos on the beach where Brian looks really big. He's leaning against a car and wearing all black, I think.

Ty Clay. My God, what happened?! He was as big as he was in 1982, if not bigger. I know he quit smoking the year before, so maybe that had something to do with it, but still.

Holy sh*t! Brian looks WORSE than he did in 1981-82. At least back in the 80's Brian's face still had color to it. In these pictures he looks grey.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

1977 probably around August. I know he looks a little troubled but I always thought 1977 was the best he looked from 1974 on. Maybe mid 83 to early 1985 too.

These pics are from the day they appeared on an Award Show (Grammy?). Rare occasion to see Carl without full beard.

How in the world do you define "looking troubled"?

Well he looks a bit scared in the first pic and in the third he looks like he's down. I don't notice quite the same expressions in the sixties and very early 70's photos.

It's funny because although I've heard it didn't really bother him...I think that after Adult/Child was rejected, I'd say the summer of 1977...he immediately started unraveling slowly but surely. Looking at these pictures he's physically fine but the look in his eyes is starting to go. By 1979 he was looking very troubled and by 1981 physically horrible and mentally unsound. Thiis is all just my interpretation.

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.

Very good points and I  think the LP not coming did bother him. Now I don't think it was the sole reason he began to go downhill again, but it along with the temporary break up, the tention swirling around the band, the hard drugs coming into play again,  Rocky and Stan not knowing how to treat his mental ailments (they obviously were effective physically at least at first), his marriage falling apart, etc.  A lot was going wrong at the time.

As far as the looks or expressions in his eyes, once in a great while you saw it in the late sixties, but the back of Holland seems to be the first time you see that something isn't right. Up to and through 1976 it slowly got worse with there being a brief respite in late 1976. Now don't get me wrong I don't think he looked off all the time, but in the last thirty years he has taken on a look of someone who has been though a lot and has a certain sadness to them.  This is especially true since 1987 or so, and may I add that it's very understandable. Brian often seems uncomfortable and again I understand this is just part and parcell with the problems he has, but I think what I am trying to get at is that his discomfort became more obvious in his demeanor.
