Suppose the Beach Boys had the sense to release previously thought (mostly) unheard material. Forget the politics and other reasons why this didn't happen, but I for one think that these might have found success if release after Endless Summer over the next year or so.

Smile
1.Our Prayer
2. Heroes and Villains (with Cantina section)
3. Do You Like Worms
4. Cabinessence
5. Wonderful
6. Songs for Children
7. Good Vibrations

8. Gee
9. Vegetables
10. Wind Chimes
11. Mrs O'learys
12. Cool, Cool Water
13. Child is the Father of the Man
14. Surfs Up

Landlocked
1. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
2. Celebrate the News
3. Suzie Cincinnati
4. I Just Got My Pay
5. My Solution
6. Why?
7. Where is She?

8. Big Sur (original)
9. Loop De Loop
10. Sound of Free
11. San Miguel
12. Lady
13. Mona Kana
14. Break Away

New album
California Feelin
Back Home
Had to Phone Ya
Good Timin
Winter Symphony
River Song
Michael Row the Boat Ashore
My Love Lives On
etc

"Over the years, I've been accused of not supporting our new music from this era (67-73) and just wanting to play our hits. That's complete b.s......I was also, as the front man, the one promoting these songs onstage and have the scars to show for it."

Assuming Dennis would have let the band use his material, here's an album I'd have waited in line for at my local record store on release day:

The Beach Boys - It's OK

Side 1
It's OK
My Love Lives On
Shortenin' Bread
Holy Man
Ding Dang

Side 2
Good Timin'
Rainbows
Battle Hymn of the Republic
California Feelin'
Pacific Ocean Blue

You would've waited in line for "Battle Hymn"?

That's sad. :-P

Would Smile succeed as a 1975 album is a very interesting question. Imo it certainly had part of that oldies vibe which was so popular in the mid 70's. On the other hand it is the product of the psychedelic age which lasted from 1966 to 1968 (at the latest). Especially in the department of psychedelic pop and baroque pop. Psychedelic rock would continue into prog rock and remained popular for the rest of the 60's.

I believe Smile's best chance of doing it good would've been the initial release. Hype was high and the time was 'right' for the type of music. Smile would stand out sorely in 1975 both in production and sound Afro. It was the sound of a bygone era of Sgt. Pepper and summer of love. However since ES had come out and BB's were popular again one can never know. Maybe it would've gained some traction after all.

Landlocked: nah, can't see it happening. Tracks are too inferior. They probably recognised this themselves at the time that these leftovers were not sufficient.

1975 new album: had a good chance, but it seems the band never really got together to record a new album and instead focused on profitable touring.
Many of the suggested tracks would probably do well on such an album but there were no real hits beyond maybe It's OK and to a lesser extent Good Timin and River Song. Would be great to see if more tracks from this poorly illuminted part of their career will emerge a la Barnyard Blue (pretty solid track imo).

Which brings up the question--just how many copies did 15 Big Ones sell? I can find highest chart position (#8), number of weeks on the charts (27), but not the number of LPs, etc. sold.

I think I'd take any combination of the songs mentioned in these posts over what wound up being 15 Big Ones.
