Brian Wilson's "Desert Island Songs" Radio Show This Weekend
«
on:
October 15, 2014, 09:42:22 AM »
From Facebook:
This Sunday, 5:00-7:00pm in the UK, noon to 2 pm EDT, 9-11 am PDT, the "California Music Show" with Mike Grant will feature Brian's eight desert island songs - and a couple bonus tracks! You can listen on the BigglesFM website at
http://bigglesfm.com/player.htm
I don't know if 8 out of 8 can be possible, but I thought it would be fun to guess what Brian's Desert-Island tunes would be. The one who gets the most correct wins an imaginary prize or something...
I can't do 8, but here are my guesses:
Rhapsody In Blue - any version
Be My Baby - The Ronettes
Little Girl Blue - The Four Freshmen
Sail Away - Randy Newman
Any track from Wendy Carlos' "Switched On Bach" album
You've Got A Friend - Carole King
Up On The Roof - The Drifters
She's Leaving Home - The Beatles

'My Obsession' by the Rolling Stones, probably.

I was thinking her version of Ross Bagdasarian's "Come On-a My House" with Stan Freeman's rockin' harpsichord solo might make the list! Wondering too if something by Les Paul and Mary Ford will sneak in there.

'It's A Blue World' makes sense. I know 'Day By Day' is the song that turned Brian onto the Four Freshmen after hearing it on the car radio back in the '50s. Interesting that he doesn't really mention that song that much today...far as I know, anyway..

"I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" by Whistling Jack Smith, perhaps?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what shes like, and I can feel how right shed be for me. Its weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what shes picking up from me. I hope its good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

It'll probably not have anything we'd expect!
But I reckon there will be a Beach Boys song. Maybe something from one of the guest artists on the new album?

"Sweet Darlin," She & Him
"Brooklyn Baby," Lana Del Rey
"Super Rich Kids," Frank Ocean
"Carry On," fun.
"Follow Your Arrow," Kacey Musgraves
"Karma Chameleon," Culture Club (his favorite band circa early/mid 80s, per his own admission, at least while being interviewed in the presence of Steve Levine and selling
The Beach Boys
).
"Be My Baby," Ronettes
And obviously, because it was a part of the soundtrack to Norbit, "Don't Cha," Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes.
Or, if you're not a fan of my award-winning twaddle, maybe something more predictable along the lines of:
"Be My Baby"
"Lonely at the Top," Randy Newman
"Hey Jude," Beatles
"Their Hearts Were Full of Spring," Four Freshmen
"Johnny B. Goode," Chuck Berry
"When You Wish Upon a Star," Rosemary Clooney
"Rhapsody in Blue," George Gershwin (I don't know what version)
"Don't Cha," Pussycat Dolls, feat. Busta Rhymes

Agree with mikeddon that there'll likely be at least one BBs or BW production. And why not? Brian's never been to my mind one to deny that he created some of the finest music ever recorded , and he's always been matter-of-fact about it rather than immodest.

SECRET SNEAK PREVIEW
Brian: "Now I'm gonna play for you my very favorite song -"
"Your favorite song?"
Brian: "Yes, my favorite song. 'Teeter Totter Love' by Jasper Dailey?"
"Jasper who?"
Brian: "I dunno, I think he was the janitor or something at the studio we were recording at, right? One day he says he can sing. I say, alright. Let's hear it Jack. So he sings and he blew me out. He blew my mind. He had this fantastic, deep voice. Just out of sight. I said, 'We gotta get this guy a solo record,' his own record, right? So we recorded a couple songs and presented as new album, a brand new album, to Capitol."
"What did they say?"
Brian: "They didn't like it. They hated it. They said, 'Brian, quit wasting our time and release Smile!' I told them, I said, 'It isn't done yet. I can't.' That Jasper Dailey record really bummed me out, put me on 40 year bummer. Believe it or not, I sabotaged my career for 40 years over that!"
"You're kidding?"
Brian: "No. Whenever I recorded a vocal or record I thought was too commercial, I ate the tape and gave the group, I don't know... 'I Just Got My Pay' or something. All because of that Jasper Dailey deal."

Hit play and we're hip deep in Gershwin! I think it's the first one. "Rhapsody in Blue"
Up next: Frankie Avalon's "Venus"... then it's... California Girls. Followed by "Across The Universe"
Doobie Brothers "What a Fool Believes" now. My only exposure to them was through their Diff'rent Strokes episode.
Rolling Stones next, "My Obsession" and a Smiley Smile mention for the correct guess! "What was he on when he thought that was the best record ever made..."
"You've Lost That Loving Feeling"
"Be My Baby"
3 extras... "With a Little Help from My Friends" plus a live "Darlin'" and one unnamed Beatles track to go.
...which ends up being "Let it Be"

And the final track was "Let It Be." I hope all of you caught the show. It was a winner from the first song "When I Grow Up" through to the end, 2 hours' later. AND with a brand new Brian Wilson show ID for the California Music Show! It's the coolest place to be on a Sunday unless you're at a concert with Himself...then you're excused...
