Love that string of great singles by Paul Revere and the Raiders.   He had very little to do with them, but no band without him.  He'll be gigging with Drake and Smitty....

I remember going to see the Raiders at those Dick Clark package shows in the '60s. They were a lot of fun. Paul will be missed.

I always thought that Paul would outlive all his bandmates, always so energetic, full of life.  Really a sad day for this lifelong Raiders fan.

RIP, Mr Revere. His band had lots of great hits that I only appreciate more with the passage of time. There are not many groups at all that can boast a list of hits this strong: Just Like Me, Let Me, Too Much Talk, Powder Blue Mercedes Queen, Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon, Good Thing, Hungry, Him or Me (What's It Gonna Be?), Don't Take It So Hard and more. Really, in the 60s, as far as American groups go, only The Beach Boys and The Monkees can compare (unless I'm forgetting someone) in terms of success and quality. And I didn't even mention yet their best known hits Kicks and Indian Reservation (not really a fan of that one). Sadly underrated and mostly forgotten, I see after checking that they have not been inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but they should be (please no posts about how the R&R Hall is crap, unimportant, political, blah blah). True, they were derivative and didn't do anything very original, but that shouldn't be the only bench mark for an artist. Paul Revere and the Raiders almost always felt fully committed to the style they were playing and did it well. Young'uns that have been sleeping on this group should check all the aforementioned hits.

It's true you didn't see anything about them in Rolling Stone or some of the other mainstream publications, but the Raiders were hardly forgotten. Goldmine often featured the band within their pages, and the latter day Raiders continued to draw large crowds to the casinos, state fairs, and all those other places we like to diss Mike Love for playing. Personally, I don't it is any great crime to play where your fans are. You can't be number one on the charts for 50 years, if you want to survive in the music biz, you have to learn to adapt to where you best fit in at the time. I never saw anyone walk away from a Raiders show disappointed (even though many first generation fans longed to see Paul reunite with Mark and the others from their heyday), these guys always put so much energy and enthusiasm into their show, in fact, I turned a few friends into fans of the Raiders by taking them to their shows. Most of the popular groups of the 60's had a run of hit records that lasted 2, maybe 3 years. The Raiders were on the charts regularly from 1965 through 1972, and their first national hit, Like Long Hair, was way back in 1961. They also spun off some successful solo careers - Freddy Weller as a country singer with Games People Play and others, and Mark Lindsay with Arizona and Silver Bird. HOF honors should have happened years ago.
