I was on my way home from a gig last night (Gruff Rhys, seeing as you ask) with a friend who isn't a big Beach Boys fan and as is often the way when I have someone 'captive', I play them Smile.  During 'Vegetables', when it got to the line "...tell us the name of your favourite vegetable" he asked a question that had never crossed my mind before - Does the line refer to a group of vegetables: "my favourite vegetables are tomatoes" or to a specific individual vegetable by name: "my favourite vegetable is Fred the tomato"? ...it was a very long journey.

Hi, my name's Doug. Would you like to dance?

I'd opt for the former.

And for what it's worth my favourite is the potato. Can we poll this? I think Smile era Brian would've liked it that way.

Neither the tomato (fruit)  or potato (something else) are a vegetable. I will say a carrot.

I think this topic could run and run ...there's a new BW album and film on the way, 'Mike's great' - 'no he's not, he's a prick'  - who cares?!  Let's list vegetables!!!

The song would've been funnier if they gave you an address at the end. Preferably Murry's.

Oh, peas, absolutely. Some vegetables I just eat solely because I know I'm supposed to, rather than because I like the taste, however peas I genuinely relish. Especially with a bit of relish, funnily enough. Seriously, you can't beat a nice, round, succulent pea. Give peas a chance!

Least favourite: parsnip. Nothing worse than the moment when you're having a Sunday roast and you mistakenly bung a parsnip into your gob expecting it to be a nice, juicy potato and that horrible overly-sweet taste unexpectedly hits your taste buds. Urrghhh!!! Sad

P.S. Gruff Rhys played Vegetables? Love him even more now! He's a huge Beach Boys fan, as are the rest of the Super Furry Animals. They actually had Paul McCartney chew Vegetables on an album track in homage to the BB's. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV455Z4PUUM Enjoy!

Hmm…

"send in your letter" or "send us your letter" but not both.

I know that you'll feel better when you send us, in your letter, the name if your favorite vegetable.

It sounds like a midwestern thing that I heard a lot as a kid..."throw papa down the stairs his hat".  Makes no sense, but we all knew what was meant.

Peas and carrots...peas and carrots...peas and carrots.

No really, peas and carrots.

Should we all write letters to the Beach Boys about our favorite vegetables now?

This whole thread is a mess, mostly because it's not 'Vegetables', it's 'Vega-Tables'. That makes it a lot funnier. Like, 'put those veggies on the table'. That table then becomes the 'Vega-Table'. Or 'Veggie-Table'. See?

Nothing to do with Slovenian methematician Baron Jurij Bartolomej Vega (1754-1802) and the mathematical tables he devised then? Grin
