I've been listening to a lot of Rufus Wainwright again lately, and I just love his music. We all know the role Van Dyke Parks had in getting him a record deal, and Elton John called him the greatest songwriter on the planet. I'm not sure I'd go THAT far, but I think he's very under-appreciated as a songwriter but also a singer (though some people find his voice grating). Go or Go Ahead, Dinner at Eight, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk...these are incredible works. Here's his Black Cab Sessions performance from 2012.

I really liked Out of the Game a lot, but otherwise I'm more impressed by his talent than his actual output. (Kind of like how I feel about Sufjan Stevens.)

I listened to him quite a bit a couple of years ago. Poses is a great album. He did cover "Wonderful/Song for Children" for a benefit compilation (War Child Heroes) as well.

He's one of those people who a lot of people still don't know about, after all this time. I think his melodies are beautiful, and the orchestrations are often so lush that you forget to pay attention to the lyrics. He's written a lot about addiction, misguided decadence and hedonism, etc. His song "I Don't Know What It is" is about emerging from addiction. I love this stripped down performance of it.

Saw him live on the going to a town tour. He is the real deal singing wise but the live show was too long and a drag

Been a fan since the Cohen cover on the shrek soundtrack

His discography is 90% fillers though but the good songs are something else:

Dont know what it is
California
Cigarettes and chocolate milk

I disagree about the filler. He has a ton of great, great songs.

Memphis Skyline (about Jeff Buckley, conjuring the myth of Orpheus in the lyrics)

This Love Affair (about walking away from drug abuse)

Sad With What I Have (written while his mother was sick; covered here by an opera singer)

Candles (again, about his mother)

ETA: Go or Go Ahead

I could post tons.
