I don't understand why the pseudonym was used. Was it because Murry was the epitome of "unhip"?

Unfortunately at the time, the Beach Boys themselves were the epitome of unhip!

True dat.

Brian could have called himself Richard M. Nixon and no one would have raised an eyebrow.

Was it Murry himself who came up with name Reggie Dunbar?

They probably all had a great time recording it (for once) and just thought it'd be fun to make a fake name for their good ol' pop.

Think what a cool mood Murry must have been in to actually sing on one of their songs...

"Reginald Dunbar" is an anagram of "El Brian Dad Gurn*", obviously.

* gurning is a traditional Cumbrian word for face-pulling, obviously.

And "Reggie Dunbar" is an anagram of "Brian Grudge".

My guess would be complications with song publishing rights, hence Murry using a pen-name, though I have no inside info.

I learn something new every time I get on here!  A cartoonist friend of mine used to use that word among his written sound effects!

Back on topic, RD is such a random sounding name, I always assumed it was one of those "opened up the phone book" stories.

The most sensical explanation (though not necessarily the correct one!) would be that Murry might have used ASCAP to collect his songwriting royalties, while Sea of Tunes and Bri-Mur publishing were BMI affiliated. It used to be a somewhat common practice for songwriters to use pen names whenever they "jumped ship" so to speak.

Just a guess on my part, though.

I remember not too long ago Brian himself said that Murry came up with the name "Reggie Dunbar" because he thought it'd be funny.

Doubt it'd have anything to do with Sea of Tunes -- the song was released after the sale of SoT, wasn't it???
