But The Heartbreakers were more the real deal.  What year were they formed?  They carry the Ramones influence.
I agree about the Heartbreakers. Formed in 1975. They made it into my first draft for the poll but in the end I left them out for bands which are more commonly associated with 'punk' in the narrower sense. To me, the Heartbreakers are a similar case like the New York Dolls. Important to the evolution that eventually turned into 'pure' punk, but not quite there yet. It's still great rock 'n' roll, though. [I guess a similar argument could be made about the MC5, the Stooges etc. etc.]

Adolescents, Angry Samoans, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat: where are they?

If I had included all those I would have had to include dozens of others as well. I wanted to limit the poll to arguably the 'biggest', most influential bands that could be considered 'punk'. But I think it's great all those countless other fantastic bands are mentioned. Might hook some of the folks here. I for one have never heard a Circle Jerks record in its entirety. Only a couple of scattered tracks ("Live Fast Die Young") here and there. Any recommendations?

My favorite band of the so-called punk era by far would be Television.  But they're not punk at all.

Maybe more sophisticated and melodic than most punk bands, but I'd consider them punk...

Jonathan Richman, Wreckless Eric, Dinosaur Jr., Replacements, Beat Happening, Bikini Kill, Bad Religion, NOFX...           And I`m assuming the Heartbreakers mentioned in previous posts are not Tom Petty`s.

The Ramones....

I go through long, long periods where The Ramones and The Beach Boys are the two best bands of all time.
the beach boys & ramones were are and will ALWAYS be the greatest bands of all time, along w the surf punks, the queers, barracudas, travoltas, manges, sonic surf city and the sunny boys..

the sunny boys..
I heard them & liked 'em. What are your favorite songs? Mine are "Shauni has a boyfriend" (insanely catchy), "Destination Paradise" (the guy sounds just like Brian), "Mahalo" ("Island Girl" knock-off) & "The prettiest girl in the school" ("Girl Don't Tell Me" connection & I hear a bit of "You're so good to me").

Out of the bands mentioned above the Ramones. But otherwise The Mr T Experience, Zatopeks, Masked Intruder, The Queers, Bracket and so on. Bracket's album Requiem has some crazy Beatles and Beach Boys influenced song.  But not the surf/beat BB/Beatles, but more the psychedelic weird stuff.

Thanks - I didn't know a couple of those. I like The Queers, though. They did a few BBs covers as well.

Dumb ?-n, but why angry message icon? Anything to do with having to limit the band names? I'm asking Lowbacca.

the Queers have done  excellent renditions of hawaii, little honda, dont back down, salt lake city as well as the fantastic baggys' debbie be true and dino, desi&billy's Im a fool.... joe king from the queers is a BBs enthusiest and his music is head&shoulders above pretty much any other punk rock band in the last 20yrs....and the Travoltas, nother standout BBs based punk group from holland also Sonic Surf City from sweden, and more recently the Sunny Boys from italy- theyve done sets of BBs tributes along with their music that has great hooks and harmonies.

Not much thought went into choosing the 'angry' message icon. You know.. you open a thread.. you can choose the icon.. people rarely get creative there, so I decided to shake it up a bit. How anti-establishment of me. Grin If you wanted to read something into it you might say it was inspired by the British genealogy of punk music, rooted in the discontentment=>anger=>aggression of a large portion of its young (working class) population in the late 60s to late 70s. Rage is what I associate with the early, 'pure' UK punk. It was an entirely different thing before that in the US, obviously.

Always loved the Ramones BUT Fav PUNK track is a toss up between the Pistols 'God Save The Queen' or 'Pretty Vacant'  (what a riff)

Great compilation! They evolved nicely through the years, not to mention they could write great songs and knew how to play their instruments rather well. As far as English punk goes, The Damned were better than the rest.
