I'm having a college retirement vacation in Minneapolis this weekend. What are some good restaurants, music stores and venues, art galleries,  etc. to enjoy while I'm in the area? I have many friends from school there that will likely guide me around, but I'd like to hear words from ya'll Smilers.

It's a cool area from what I've heard, very progressive. Why would I leave?

Gabo, for some art ideas, try the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (free, except usually one featured exhibit or performance for $) and the Walker Art Center (free sculpture garden is cool).

For food, tons of options, depends how much you want to spend and how into it you are. The best restaurants in the city in my opinion are the 112 Eatery, Bar La Grassa, and Burch, all operated by the same (Beard-award winning) chef, Isaac Becker. The former two might be struggles to get into without reservations on a weekend, but Burch's basement is a cool pizzeria. (Street level is a steakhouse.) Speaking of pizza, Black Sheep, in the North Loop (aka Warehouse District) is great, a basement-level place. You can get good Ethiopian food at Blue Nile. Cool bars with food include two right together on 35th and Nicollet, Pat's Tap (skeeball...) and Hola Arepa. The Lyn-Lake area has plenty of bars and restaurants, your friends may well be taking you there or to Northeast. Sea Salt is a decent seafood place right on Minnehaha Falls, which is also worth checking out and usually has some free live music or entertainment going on weekend evenings. For a casual burger / Minnesota craft beer, check the Blue Door.

Brewpubs may be worth a visit if you're into that. Indeed is a good one.

Music stores (assuming you mean record stores, not instruments), The Electric Fetus is the classic, a '60s place near the MIA mentioned above. If you mean places to check out instruments, Twin Town, on Lyndale, is cool and has some history.

If you're looking to catch a show, try the First Ave main room--iconic place. Camera Obscura plays Saturday night, might be cool. Otherwise you can check places like the Varsity, Nomad, Triple Rock. Sadly the historic Turf Club (in St. Paul) is closed for renovations.

Speaking of, I'm sure St. Paul has plenty to do, too...I just don't go there much. The Muddy Pig is a good bar over there.

At night
Dinkytown (Varsity, Blarney's, Library etc) or Seven Corners.

And why not Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit.

During the day
Lake Calhoun.

I'd second that suggestion.

Go to Windom and the gas station there and start playing the Surfin' Safari.
