The whole album belongs in the garbage...after being set on fire. Worst BB solo album IMHO, by far.

I liked it better than Carl's debut.

pixletwin,  I'm shocked by that opinion.  You need to live with both Bruce's and Carl's first albums a bit more.
Strange that we are on a Beach Boys Board, and so few are familiar with any of these solo records.
The only ones I would have trouble with are the David Marks stuff.  Most of the rest I own, or have heard over the years to judge if they were worth owning.  Blondie's solo records are not being included because of the obscurity factor?  Rei has a point on at least including the first one.
Anyway, I agree with Billy on the whole.  Bruce didn't better the Beach Boys numbers he re-cut, and Barry did "I Write the Songs" at least as well.  I'm not afraid to say Manilow's first three albums are good, certainly better than Going Public.  Won't defend him after 1975, but schmaltz is okay...and there is a lot of it to pick from on Bruce's album.  Like this:
"Won't Somebody Dance With Me"  Bet Bruce liked the Manilow records.  He sure brought some of the same production style with him when he came back to the Beach Boys in the late 70's.  Check out "As Sure as I'm Standing Here" from Manilow's Tryin' To Get the Feeling (1975).  In fact, Bruce should have had a shot at "A Nice Boy Like Me" - very White, very nice - and not so different, though less sinister, than Steely Dan's "Bad Sneakers" (also from 1975).

Welcome back, one and all, to the second thread of the Beach Boys Solo Survivor.

The Solo Survivors are going to tackle the main solo albums of members of the Beach Boys. This will not include solo albums released prior to membership in the Beach Boys. This will also not include works done by members who were participating in different groups (ie David Marks in The Moon or The Marksmen) nor will it include "Best Of" albums or rehash albums (ie Summertime Cruisin' by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston will not be included. This also means we will not be including Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE or I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.) Lastly, we will not be including EP's or Unreleased Albums.

Some of the Solo Survivor albums may be hard to come across. Smilers are encouraged to locate legal copies of the solo albums. I expect these rounds to go quicker with less voting than normal. No big deal.

So without further ado...

Quote
Going Public is Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston's third and final solo album, and the only one recorded after becoming a member of the band. It was released in 1977 under Columbia Records. Bruce proves to the world what Beach Boys fans have known from the get-go: namely, he hasn't a rock 'n' roll bone in his body.

So apparently this is the most hated album in entire Beach Boys Oeuvre.  LOL

Won't Somebody Dance With Me? Nope. (11)

Per the usual, vote for your LEAST FAVORITE TRACK. The track with most votes will be voted off.

Tally on July 20th. If you can bring yourself to vote.

Thank you to the 11 Smilers who voted off a song I didn't vote for. It means I can keep my previous round's pick and not have to listen to this album again to vote!  LOL

Oh my.  Not going to get too much interest are we?
Oh well...carry on then.  You have the next one pegged about right:
Oh the horror of another listen to "Rendezvous"
I too will not be tossing this on to my turntable for a fresh listen...

Rendezvous

This album isn't even that bad, considering how many people dislike it, I'd actually say it's kinda underrated.

Sorry, but Bruce makes Neil Sedaka seem tough.  That's kind of an accomplishment.
