Hey all,

Loooooooooong-time lurker on the forum, finally decided to jump into the mix from time to time.  Thought I'd pitch in on the "Smiley Smilers Who Make Music" scene with the newest EP from my power pop/indie rock/etc. band, The Diabolical Machines.

It's called "Get Scrappy!"  It's a little lower-fi and quite a bit more aggressive-sounding than our 2013 EP.  You can listen to it all - and grab a digital and/or physical copy, if you're so inclined - on our Bandcamp site:
http://diabolicalmachines.bandcamp.com/album/get-scrappy

For background - we're a four-piece from Fort Worth, TX.  I play organ - a 1965 Farfisa Mini-Compact, with occasional bits of Hammond on the new EP as well (I also throw a tiny dollop of overdriven electric tenor ukulele in here and there) - and do backing vocals.  My lady Steph handles guitar and lead vocals.  Our bassist also does some backing vocals (more now than when we recorded), and we also have drums of course.  Some songs are written entirely by Steph, some entirely by me, and some we co-write.

We have a lot of '60s influence in us, both directly (from '60s bands) and indirectly (from modern bands influenced by '60s bands).  Steph is a huge Monkees nerd, and I'm a huge Beach Boys/Brian Wilson nerd.  Other big influences on us are Dressy Bessy, The Apples in Stereo, The New Pornographers, Guided By Voices, the various bands of the Paisley Underground, etc.

We've also got a video for the title track up on YouTube - filmed for zero budget on-the-fly while we were in Austin performing during SXSW:

Tracklisting:
1.  Slice & Dice
2.  Get Scrappy!
3.  Struck
4.  Weightless
5.  Artoria

Hope y'all enjoy it.  Our Bandcamp also has our previous EP and our, er, non-traditional Christmas song.

I have been dubbed Mr. Pet Sounds and Mr. Country Love by polite and honored board member Smile Brian. I hope I live up to those esteemed titles.

Ha, thanks!

Requisite BBs content:  we have both "Wild Honey" and "All I Wanna Do" (from Sunflower) in rotation for our live shows from time to time.

Yeah, I like this quite a lot. I love the garage feel. I definitely feel a strong VU influence as well as the Apples in Stereo. I'm totally going to be rotating this one.

Also, the guitar reminds me sort of Os Mutantes "A Minha Menina."

Thanks so much!  Glad to hear you enjoyed it.  We definitely wanted to go in a lower-fi, garage-y direction after our first EP (which was recorded in a fancy studio).  The garage pop sound is what we're going to keep exploring.  We recorded it in our friend Drew's home studio - he's the guitarist/vocalist of local "middle-fi suburban slacker rock" trio Missing Sibling - http://missingsibling.com

The Os Mutantes comparison is very cool - I'd never thought of that, but yeah, I can get that.  We definitely have a dollop of psych pop in some of the sounds.  On the EP, Steph primarily plays an Eastwood Breadwinner, but there's also some Gretsch Country Gentleman on there.  The amps we used were some nice warm tube amps - a Peavey Classic 50 and a Fender Vibroverb (in fact, on the title track, my Farfisa organ is being played through *both* of those amps simultaneously, along with a Big Muff fuzz pedal).
