Hey all.
I love the 60's surf bands and 60's instrumentals in general, and miss the days when a song without words could crack the top 10. I like Dick Dale and the Ventures and all of the classic groups, but have yet to delve into any modern surf bands. I'm only interested in instrumental groups, and wondered if you folks can point me to some.
Thanks!

I don't know how "modern" they are, but Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet are aces!

There is a local band here in Chicago called Ambassadors To Earth I've seen play a couple of times and they put on a really good show.

Top of the list, hands down...since the mid 90's...Los Straitjackets.
If you want to hear what they do, listen to "Pacifica", and prepare to search online for tickets to your closest venue when they come around on tour again.

A couple more - I would note these bands are stylistically reverentially into Surf music, rather than pushing the genre: Surf Coasters - Japanese style mongers; pm me if ya wanna teaser The Break - www.thebreak.net.au - dude from the Violet Femmes (bass man Brian Ritchie) matched with the rhythm section of Midnight Oil (major Australian Band) Blue Bottles - http://thebluebottles.bandcamp.com/ - I can not express my love for these guys in words (but I can express my love for these guys via a sticky emission)

Mike's not a Hawthorne boy. The Hawthorne guys stuck together. The Wilsons and I always had a special bond. We felt like we were a team.

Ok! I've been working though these recommendations. Really liking the Aqua Velvets and Los Straitjackets even though the Lucha Libra masks are a bit gimmicky. Thanks everyone. Going to check out Christmas/holiday surf music as well. My playlist tends towards doo-wop right now.
