thanks for playing, Sheriff. I'm gonna refrain from complimenting your choices, or picking them apart (just as I hope you all would refrain from commenting on mine) until everyone who might want to make a list has done so. I think to comment , at this point, would destroy the immediacy of this exercise. For now, let's give it 24 hrs. NO FURTHER COMMENT.

No problem.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Oasis - Supersonic
Crystals - Then He Kissed Me
Supremes - I Hear A Symphony
Funkadelic - You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks
Elton John - Rocket Man
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Little Richard - Long Tall Sally
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side
Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
Ray Charlies - What'd I Say

I'm more than sure that I've forgotten something highly important....maybe picking 10 from each decade would make things a bit less impossible  Grin

Often I don't necessarily know what songs--especially older songs that were released before I was born / conscious of music--were singles. And even if I know, I feel like I didn't experience them as singles, as they were a part of the fabric of the (then-) now. So I'm going on something of a timeline of my music-conscious life instead: I remember these being singles when they were released and loved them. Rough chronological order.

Let's Go Crazy, Prince
Walk This Way, Run-DMC feat. Aerosmith
Talk Dirty to Me, Poison
You Can Call Me Al, Paul Simon
Sweet Child o' Mine, Guns n Roses
The Cult of Personality, Living Colour
Hold On, Tom Waits
Sexxx Laws, Beck
Step Into My Office, Baby, Belle & Sebastian
Hey-Ya, Outkast
Tropical Ice-land, Fiery Furnaces
I Wish That I Could See You Soon, Herman Dune
Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse, Of Montreal
Never Forget You, The Noisettes
Letter to My Countrymen, Brother Ali
Chum, Earl Sweatshirt
Follow Your Arrow, Kacey Musgraves
Don't Think Twice, Dolly Parton

I really should have included the Undertones' brilliant "Julie Ocean."

The vinyl single is irrelevant in my generation and I could not tell what a good one is. What's the difference between a great song and single anyway?

Not in any particular order:

1. "Like a Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan
2. "Wouldn't It Be Nice"/"God Only Knows" - The Beach Boys
3. "Paperback Writer"/"Rain" - The Beatles
4. "See Emily Play" - Pink Floyd
5. "Waterloo Sunset" - The Kinks
6. "All Day and All of the Night" - The Kinks
7. "September Gurls" - Big Star
8. "Sweet Jane"/"Rock and Roll" - The Velvet Underground
9. "Diddy Wah Diddy" - Captain Beefheart
10. "What'd I Say" - Ray Charles

Tough list. Never really paid much attention to what was and what wasn't a single.

Be My Baby
Do I Love You- Ronettes
I'd Rather Go Blind- Etta James
Do I Love You- Frank Wilson
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow- Shirelles
Surf's Up
Good Vibrations
Iceblink Luck- Cocteau twins
Boys Don't Cry- The Cure
Baby I Need Your Lovin'- Four Tops

A lot of my favourite songs I don't know off the top of my head were singles or not, particularly those by non-rock artists. E.G."Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Nina Simone? Throw that in near the top if it was.

Damn. Forgot my all-time favourite single----"Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen. It's too late now, of course...
