The Beach Boys ICON [2CD]

One of the most iconic bands in popular music history and America’s first pop band to reach the 50 year milestone, The Beach Boys have performed and recorded the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer since 1961. Founded in Hawthorne, California, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine.  In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits with Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing for the group.

The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits (36).  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world.

Sail On Sailor / Be True to Your School / Surf's Up / That's Why God Made the Radio has got to be the weirdest sequence of songs on any BB record !

Why is this 2 cd's?

It's the Beach Boys/Capitol.  Why else?

Why is this 2 cd's?

Cos a handful of us shelled out for the 1 disc version. Buy this and it'll be followed by a 3CC edition before Christmas.

Capitol is now part of the Universal Music Group and the ICON series is UMG's "budget" series of greatest hits discs.

Actually when I  saw the title of this thread I thought it was in respect of the 2013 European BB's comp on the ICON Label through universal, sadly not but as you can see from the following list there are some interesting inclusions

1) Cali Girls
2) Good Vibes
3) Fun x 3
4) God Only Knows (instrumental)
5) WIBN
6) 409
7) A Young Man Is Gone
Cool All Summer Long
9) Sloop John B (instrumental)
10) LDC
11) Rhonda (single version)
12) IGA
13) Dance x 3
14) Be True To Your School (Album version)
15) Surfer Girl
16) Then I Kissed Her
17) Little Girl (You're My Miss America)
18) S Safari
19) B Freaking Ann
20) Don't Worry Baby

The booklet actual lists in some cases musician credits and lead vocals.

Yep another compilation , but strange to say the least.

What Ed said.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Why such a small amount of songs per CD when this group has literally hundreds of quality songs to hand? There's even a load of hits that aren't on here: Do It Again, Heroes & Villains, Darlin', etc. A frustrating compilation.

This CD isn't really an official release within the Beach Boys' catalogue, it's meant for discount retail markets like Wal-Mart and Target.  You probably wouldn't find it in stores actually known for selling music like FYE or Barnes & Noble though you will probably find 50 Big Ones which is a much more definitive 2-disc compilation.

Suspect there's at least four Beach Boys "Icon" compilations.

There's the 2CD, 22-track track version Howie kicked off the thread with:

an 11 track version I referred to above:

a 20-track 1CD version which Rob mentions:

… and which I can't for the life of me find a pic of…

and another which I've glimpsed but not yet studied in a Sainsburys supermarket here in th' UK:

Any more anyone?

Maybe this belongs in the "Collections" thread!

Are the instrumental tracks from Stack-O-Tracks or The Pet Sounds Sessions?

I always figured this 1970 budget comp contained the strangest tracklist of them all: https://www.discogs.com/The-Beach-Boys-The-Beach-Boys/release/726715
