I really think it might be American made,

Are you jaywhofan on YouTube? Perhaps you could ask him! Grin
Indeed I am.  Ill report back when/if I get an answer.

Some irrational impulse (which came to me just as I was nodding off last night) prompted me to check whether it wasn't Hole, Courtney Love's band.

It wasn't. The voice doesn't fit at all. Grin

While I still have the courage to ask:

If some kind person would like to link this mystery song on Facebook (of which I am not a member) for the wider audience it obviously has, I would be much obliged. :=)

Time to bump this topic (again).
This is the largest audience I have (the social media are not my scene) so I'm just going to have to make the most of it! Cool Guy

Here comes that mystery song again (sigh):

I took a different tack today and searched through all the online songs (1152 of 'em) with the word "ruined" in the lyrics----to no avail, as I feared.

I tried a similar tack and came up empty.

I thought it sounded like early Cranberries but that came to naught.

Thanks MD and SRH for your input. :=)

It still sounds non-Western to me, although Jay's certain he's heard it on US TV.

One day...

My bet is that it is royalty free music... like what you would hear in the background of a tv show;which is to say it is anonymous.

The voice sounds a bit like Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star before she may have found her voice.

Thanks for the input, pixletwin. But if that's so, why did someone take the trouble to quote two lines from it...

It certainly is! A couple of years back I eventually identified a track I'd been looking for for 40 years! Hopefully this one won't take that long, lol.

It's a bit dispiriting having to google permutations of "crisp snare drum tattoo", "distorted guitar", "Andy Summers chords" (thanks, GF)  and "goth/grunge/No Doubt/whatever" each and every time because there's no other way. The lyrics are nowhere to be found apart from those two lines, which luckily I discovered before even they became ungooglable.

I'm still hoping to walk past a music store some time in Amsterdam (or Berlin or Kraków) and hear it blasting out!

It's been baffling me for a couple of years now. Like its uploader, I have no idea. How about you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtFUIbmIJEU

I should add that I've followed up every imaginable lead and all I ever found was the snatch of lyrics mentioned in one of the Comments. A major problem is that what I assume is the title (it's sung twice at the climax) is impossible to make out----at least it's unintelllgible to me. I have this idea that the song comes from Central or Eastern Europe----just a hunch...

It's been three and a half years since I first asked this question. Lots of new posters have arrived since then.

Unless by some miracle you recognize the song straight off, it may help to read the thread in its entirety...

This may not be of any help, but to my ear the missing words sound like "Once Again"

It would fit with the other lyrics...

"Does it mean I'll never have you...  once again... once again

Also, I agree with the other comment that it very well could be an American or Canadian band.  Do you know how the person who posted to YouTube got the audio?  That could possibly be a good clue...  recorded off college radio, found on a tape given to him, etc.?

It does indeed. Thank you! What worries me though is that the word heard more in the background "on the one" (over the G minor chord) is also part of the title.

According to the uploader, it came from a video, which does make one suspect a TV show.
