Capitol In-Store Displays From The 60's, Here's Another One From '65...

I know there was another thread where some of this stuff was posted but I couldn't find it...and since the "Big Beat" thread was focused on the Smile related displays, I thought it better to start a new one.

So anyway, this photo just turned up courtesy of Donna Loren on Facebook, notice it's even copyrighted to her so if it causes any issues posting this, I'll take it down.

Check out this in-store display promo thingy with the lovely Ms. Loren and one of the guys from My Three Sons. It has to be around March 1965, I reckon.

Take an especially close look at the albums on display, and the text on the display.

You'll see Beach Boys Today in the lower left front rack, and above that Beatles '65. Also, even though by that time it was a few albums out of sequence, notice "Surfin USA" is peeking out of one of the right-hand side racks too. And speaking to the era, there is a Beatles instrumental/strings cover album front and center...odd, since the actual Beatles product is on the second tier.

And notice too one of the ways "Teen Set" magazine was distributed: The text on the display says you get a copy when you buy one of these Capitol albums. At this time, it was still called "The Teen Set", and it looks like Issue #2 of the run is the current issue in that rack. Issue #1 was devoted entirely to the Beach Boys. This issue features them talking about the European tour, the same topic we hear on tape talking in that bull session with "Big Daddy".

I thought this was an interesting look at how we would have found these items on display if we walked into a random record shop in 1965, and I never balk at seeing more photos of Donna Loren...

Or is that really Surfin USA peeking out? Looking again I might be wrong on that one...can't tell.

Where were these displays on display? How big and numerous were record stores, anyways? Did many of the stores have listening booths like they have in old movies such as "Cactus Flower"? I've always been curious as to how records were marketed back then. I've read that records in the '60s began to be sold more in mass discount stores (Target and KMart type of stores),  as well as department and drug stores, so I wonder what type of impact that had on actual record stores.

VERY COOL FIND!!!!    Love to have one of these for my collection; I think the one I saw many years ago was similar to the bottom piece, but NO TeenSet top; and it didn't have the added width of the LP displays.  

The only odd part, to me, is thecurled cover second  from the top on the left. An Album flat/ cover slick?  WHA???!?  
And you're not wrong on the Surfing USA.
