My biggest beef with the 1971 version of SU is the darn organ. It obscures the beauty of the original 1967 session musician's playing. That and Carl's singing doesn't  quite carry the emotional drive of the song to where it needed to be.

IMO of course.  Grin

Til I Die. Sorry Surf's Up you've already won before. Brian's vocal on on the 1st movement of Surf's Up is better than Carl's.

Surf's Up

All great songs and while I put the title track (with Brian's lead) on Smile, add additional songs to this album, and call it Landlocked, the directions couldn't be simpler:  VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE TRACK!!!

I don't know why everyone has to make these things complicated.  Just answer the question(s) honestly.  Roll Eyes

I think it fills it out a little. Adds a bit of sheen.

The track would feel even more out of place without it. It feels sonically like an extension of Feel Flows, LPR, and Til I Die because of that organ sound.

True. The organ kind of adopts it into the familial sound texture of the other songs. But taken out of that context, to my ears, it muddies the production.

You're right. These people who're voting for their second favourite track because Surf's Up won an earlier vote need to ask themselves what they'll do at the next election - vote Republican because your favourite Democrats won last time? It's so fair it's almost admirable! LOL

Love them both, but Til I Die is so powerful and poignant. It says so much with so little. I've listened to it, along with God Only Knows, more than any other song.

Most people who have voted for TID and mentioned surfs up have done so stating that they prefer Brian's vocals to carls. How exactly does that make Surfs Up their true favorite track?

WELCOME TO THE END OF ROUND #21 of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR!!!!

Quote
Surf's Up is the seventeenth studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on August 30, 1971 on Brother Records and Reprise. The album was released to more public anticipation than the Beach Boys had previously had for several years. The album's title is taken from the song of the same title written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks for the abandoned studio album, Smile.

Welcome back to the a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  Grin).... and without further ado...

2 Smilers had to Feel the Flow against the much stronger currents.

16 Smilers heard the children's song as the finest.

I suppose the right song won. But if WIBNTLA made it to Surf's Up, I would have voted for that to win.

I might as well say it now. This was the single hardest Survivor round so far. All the previous rounds were a piece of cake compared to this. Anyone else agree?

Yea!

My favourite song won, for once.  Pirate

Although I fear there will be blood on the axe tonight, down yonder Yorkshire dales - stop for no bearded hitchhikers should you be down that way after dark

Not surprised to see 'Til I Die win. The title of "best track on [insert album title here]" becomes rather interchangeable when songs as great as Surf's Up, Feel Flows and 'Til I Die are competing.

I think choosing between This Whole World, Forever and All I Wanna Do will be much harder. (Which will almost certainly be the final Sunflower songs based on current trends)

Not for me. Forever easily gets my vote. Though if a miracle happens and All I Wanna Do gets voted off instead of Slip On Through, I'll vote for Slip On Through instead!
