I have a copy of Rubber Soul which I received NEW some time between 2003 - 2005. On the back cover it says SW 2442. The runoff etching originally says "ST 2442" but the "ST" is crossed out and "SW" is written before it. On side 2 it just has the crossed out "ST" and then "SW" written before it.

Regardless of it being ST or SW, the earliest (according to discogs.com) the record could be from is 1978. Now I sincerely doubt a Beatles record pressed in '78 could still be selling copies in 2005.

I would've just assumed that they went through such efforts to duplicate the album cover (though they used one from the 70s) that they ignored the catalog number.... but it's also in the runoff etching. And what's really strange is that someone originally wrote ST-2442 on the runoff, which is the late 60s/early 70s catalog number.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

What color Capitol/Apple label is it? Did you buy it new or used with the shrink wrap opened?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

It was a gift about 10 years ago. I can't remember if it had shrink wrap but it was in perfect condition and I assumed it was new. My mom bought it off the internet somewhere. I called her and asked but of course she doesn't remember.

I'd call the label color maroon. I just took a picture, does this link work? https://gm1.ggpht.com/gip5-b0GkccCsQMva0SLINjN5RiXNc0MUqVq9mOQjzKadEVPUAiPnAlaMPs7fK0i2GjYgQ5aS874uVVeXGoJCACFRN21EzBYvDhxMLtcE6iW5QaiybmETY5dtOK8M8TGoUo70OIVEZWmn0uSVRSdq0HkTum-y9hr5jRyTI9d7EqZcSjfPFW2Xxj90VoiD9mSfJA5IGganEHbBloeQSPgkc-atZqXzvfPDH8DcgXDEOt_16qonvBRm5sPP8tlgqGFizD5lgSv6P6wRQQk6Y5b-lseUKA_0tRhdxZgyRfx1rwEXMf_HbSn6VNQIXvqzdd4_6qNSsmb6LoM0X5cZD1YUZtO7DU2McKbaUdD--OHYNQX1UuNANYhSyCqI8d9a2sncwRidYxUJG5ulnkPPGpceUcciO87RGOXIs4zR3Cz2Zw0SaQHPJBBJtyX7Oec2P4tiwz8yd3BVEgnD9086Hu2l0km5v9bRDjgudV4EU8dP3_romiRnbuwcK6R1hzwn1PlbnuYIwPIHpo3eFH7rOVbnxMjbaliC_8Z8Q=w1325-h539-l75

No, the link doesn't work.

I have a copy of (the US version of) Rubber Soul which dates from probably 1966 or 1967. 1968 at the latest. The "Rubber Soul" lettering is brown. At the top-right it says "T 2442." On the edge of the album jacket I can read what appears to be "THF F1TI FS." I think. The jacket isn't in good shape and has scotch tape over it so it's hard to read.

Have a hunch this is probably worth a fair amount of $$ for collectors - but it's going nowhere. Smiley

Since the album came out in December 1965, it's a copy of one of the original printings!

Definitely not an original, the back cover says SW 2442, not T 2442. The runoff etchings either indicate "ST 2442" or "SW 2442". See if this link works: http://s12.postimg.org/3qxlbdwjg/photo_1.jpg

That link works. Definitely NOT an original, the printing on my one has the old Capitol records logo (multi-colored).

That said, I don't think I've ever seen a Capitol records logo like that (though mind you, I haven't paid particular attention). Maybe it was a special printing of some sort???

Nerdy time. Here's a photo I just took of my album.

According to this, the T-X-1-2442 indicates it was printed in Canada.

EDIT: According to Discog's, it might be the *jacket* only that was printed in Canada. Seems the album itself might have been printed in the USA (bottom of the back cover says, "Made in U.S.A. Factories: Scranton, Pa - Los Angeles, Calif. - Jacksonville, Ill.")

The album in question. Rubber Soul Capitol SW-2442, SW1 2442 maroon (purple) label was re-issued from between 1978 - 1983. But I'd say 1978 because of the matte purple finish and the abbreviated "Mfd" on the rim printing along with the large Capitol dome logo and because it's stereo. Capitol matrix number prefix "SW" means it's a stereo LP. Don't know why "ST" was crossed off on yours. Evidently, they didn't press a large number (or any) mono Beatle albums, at least for the run in '78. Some of the albums have "Mastered by Capitol" stamped in the inner groove near the label. Don't see it on this one.

It's worth about 20 bucks in mint condition.

Ok, this explains everything: it's not my copy of Rubber Soul. I didn't take all my records with me when I moved out (I have a really tiny apartment) and one of my friends brought some of her aunt's Beatles records over, so the 1978 date makes sense. My mid-00s copy of Rubber Soul is still at my parents' house.
